Official - Defoe

Sorry mate, Bale will hit it across the face of goal as sure as the sun will shine. If Defoe doesn't realise that, having played with him regularly for at least two seasons, then he has no place on a football pitch. It is Bale's most dangerous tool on a counter attack, it is what allowed us to humiliate Inter Milan at WHL and every striker in our squad should know that, when a defence is stretched, the ball will flash across the keeper.

It's as simple as that, imo.

I'm a fan of Defoe, but not reading that properly was idiotic really. I was screaming at the telly for him to run and he took off far too late.

I just cant agree with that. Bale had an eternity to pass the ball to Defoes feet OR pass the ball where he could just run onto it.

Defoe had to stay onside...for the first time in a long time, he checked his run perfectly, and kept his head to stay onside. And now he's breatted for not mindlessly steaming forward into what would clearly have been an offside position.

Bale had the pass wide open...he tried to go past the defender. I assume, to shoot. When he realised that was pushing it, he passed. The pass was not only misplaced, but over hit. JD actually done well to come so close considering. Bales fault all the way.

Look at the starting position, Bale was always ahead of Defoe, there was never a second that Defoe could have moved into an offside position as Bale is quicker than Defoe, even when he has the ball at his feet. This is bread and butter stuff, it doesn't get more clear cut. If you check back, there is always the chance the FB will nick the ball, when you have a player like Bale in the team, you move towards the goal, without fail.

But as I say, I think (like me) Defoe was expecting the pass inside the defender, to feet. That was THE best option....when Bale took it on, Defoe headed goalwards. At this stage, the perfect pass was still on.....Defoe never had a chance to hit the target, so I dont see how it can be his fault. The perfect pass never came, either to feet, or across the goal.

You can slate Defoe for his run, but not Bale for misreading his run? Or holding the ball for too long? Or being in two minds about whether to shoot or pass? It was 2 on 1, and Bale was the only player in full control of the situation from beginning to end.

Defoe is half the PL striker Bent has been in his career in front of far inferior midflields and defences

Common myth I'm afraid. Defoe's goalscoring record looks far worse than it is because of the number of substitute appearances he's made over the years. Do you do the Fantasy Premier League? I got the data from there but my excel spreadsheet crashed so I haven't got the exact numbers, but Defoe has a better minutes per goal and minutes per assist record than Bent since the start of the 06/07 season. This season they've scored the same number of league goals but with Defoe playing far less and not taking the penalties which Bent does at Villa.

Rooney is a given for the England squad, but him aside then Defoe is outscoring all of his rivals (bar Sturridge) despite playing far less than any of them. Not only that, but how many times over the years have England's players and managers complained after an embarrassing exit from a tournament that they were tired - now this time we will finally have a player who's had half as much playing time as some of his opponents yet has still had a good season, it should be an absolute no brainer to take him in the squad.

He's made those substitute appearances for a reason - easy to figure out why, I'm afraid

Not saying he's a bad player - simply made a comparison to Bent who's been far more consistent for much longer in far worse teams

Take a look at the run again. The starting position is the CB on Defoe. Bale takes the ball wide and it is then that Defoe is in open space. If he tries to pass to Defoe straight away, Defoe is in a running match with the CB and he rarely wins the battle when he is tightly marked. It is nothing like the first goal where he has found space.

The CB does his job of shutting down the angle, whilst trying to push Bale wide. At this point, Bale can check and try to pass inside to Defoe... Which leaves a chance of the CB cutting the pass out or one of the tracking defenders getting back to Defoe and Defoe being under pressure anyway.

So Bale opts to beat his man leaving Defoe in bags of space, completely unchallenged to score a tap in... But Defoe hasn't reacted and is behind play so misses the chance.

We have scored a lot of goals this way... We have missed a lot of chances this way from all of our players being slow to react. Normally it is in build up play that they fail to read Bale and not in a break away, though. This was Defoe's error all the way.

This is ultimately what happened and anyone twisting this as a mis-hit/misplaced brick pass from Bale is either delusional or hasn't seen the actual game

People defending Defoe for his one is presposterous - he's been playing with Bale for years. Bale did exactly the same to Inter at home, time and time again. Textbook winger material. Didn't complain then, did you?

Bale made it so easy for Defoe - no defender to outmuscle / outrun with the ball and keep composure, no keeper to beat 1 on 1, etc. and people still compain it's Bale's fault.

Ridiculous

Arcy, you old dog. How the fudge are you a senior member already? I'm going to have to get into random and start boosting my post count with badger porn!

All he had to do was keep a yard behind Bale and it's a goal every day of the week.

He's made the substitute appearances for the reason that we've had better players ahead of him. The same reason that Bent was taken out of the Tottenham team entirely and no big club has gone anywhere near him since.

Bent's Premier League and international goalscoring records are no better than Defoe's, yet Defoe contributes more in terms of build up play and the ability to create a goal out of nothing. Defoe is a far better player.

my initial reaction was that Bale should have squared early..cannot bear to watch replays...but no blame attached to either player...for once i am just going to get over my depression and rejoice that we are third in the league at the end of january..

You requested I ignore you a few months back. You didnt want to debate with me, yet you want to make comments to me third hand.

SUIYHA, are you Moonlit Knight's alias? Very similar nuance in your tone

Either way - you're post is both factually and objectively wrong.

JD contributing to overall play? lmfao. Quite possibly the greediest out of all first teamers

Funnily enough, it was this exact same lack of understanding that lead to a draw with Emirates Marketing Project at the start of 10/11 season when Bale must have fizzed half a dozen balls across the goal with no-one reacting to them. It has been the one thing I have screamed about for at least 18 months now.

Even if you just break down Bale's game, you know that more often that not, he is going to go across goal and not cut back. The reason is that, on a counter attack, Bale's entire game is built on beating the FB. Sure, if he completely roasts the FB he might find an angle to cut it back. But more often than not, Bale is going to gain a yard and use that space, on the fly, to put the ball across the face of goal, it's all there is time and space to do. And why not, we've seen some corking goals scored that way and I never want to see Bale, of all people, put a foot on the ball.

i'm still not entirely convinced you can say that defoes positioning was bad. the way bale beat lescott it wasnt even clear clear cut he was going to do it. infact i personally though bale ran into a bit of a trap but bale being bale he managed to get something through.......had defoe been in line with bale then that ball could have easily been played behind him.

plus there were a number of times that bale could have passed the ball to defoe, if defoe see's these opportunities then he'd be silly to cut out the numerous windows of receiving the pass by just committing himself to the one option of sticking his nose in harts crutch. like a dance routine bale was leading and defoe had to follow......which i thought he did a decent job of doing.

and like i said a shade slower on the pass or a half a metre away from hart (i actually thought the ball was too close to hart for comfort on first viewing) and we score and everyone is happy....i've got to say sometimes when we fizz balls across goal i'm actually angry people just blindly run to the goal line...you have to hang back just a little bit to cover your options

sure in a perfect world defoe might have hugged the onside line and just waited, but he made a decision that technically wasnt even wrong, things just didnt work out

IMHO

I agree - this has been Defoe's weakness all along. with a winger like bale who can beat his marker and send in a low cross, all i can say is that defoe just isn't smart enough to see the play or understand how to make use of his strengths.

is there an ignore button? or a foe button? or something similar?

i'm finding that some people are attention seeking enough to have digs at me via third and fourth parties. before the foe button just took them out of my line of sight.....but now i have no way of escaping:(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRDbkVYu5sY

just had another look . i take it back

there is no way defoe has done ANYTHING WRONG IN THAT WHOLE SCENARIO. the is AT MOST 2 yards behind bale...which is practically nothing.

infact , even though bale does well to get the ball across, i have to be honest, it could have been better placed.

if defoe runs to the goal line like people are saying....he is offside. finish

nah, i'm not letting this one go......black on burnt rice is my take on this shiiiiiiiiit

oh come on man, thats a terrible thing to say especially if your basing that on the one miss against city which on second , third, and fourth viewing wasnt even a 'stupid' mistake by JD anyway

look at the cut of the grass and when bale goes from shade to shade..defoe is literally 1 or two steps behind him trying to keep onside

there is no way you can pin that mess on defoe...no way.
