Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Yes, at least among those who draw most of their football knowledge from the fountain of wisdom that is FM in its various editions and try to impose it upon the real world.

Sad to say that in todays game there are many supporters who have never played the game ( at a decent level) and their knowledge comes from FM and kids games on abacus s and think it makes them experts.

Another day. another cup exit another Poch hasn't won a trophy article (https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...m-hotspur-white-hart-lane-mauricio-pochettino):

At least he gives some context for our lack of trophies over the years:

Mauricio Pochettino has suggested he might have won a trophy at Tottenham by now had the club not been forced to move away from White Hart Lane as part of their new stadium build.

The manager saw another route to silverware closed off on Thursday when his team lost on penalties to Chelsea in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup and, not for the first time, he found himself being asked to explain why he had not won anything during his four and a half years in charge.

In an impassioned answer Pochettino pointed out Tottenham’s glory days had come during the era of black and white TV – they did the league and FA Cup double under Bill Nicholson in 1961, an achievement recalled in the dramatic big-screen montage before home matches.

Pochettino noted Spurs had “no history of winning”, with the subtext he ought not to be blamed for a lack of trophies. In the last 34 years the club have won the FA Cup once and League Cup twice.

The Argentinian is keen for people to see the bigger picture, which is the progress that the team have made in terms of their Champions League qualifications and the ability to compete with bigger-spending rivals. His exasperation was clear, particularly when he considered the temporary relocation to Wembley, which will run deep into a second season because of the delays over the stadium project.

“We are always close to the last step [to trophies] but to achieve it is the most difficult thing,” Pochettino said, before Sunday’s FA Cup tie at Crystal Palace. “At the moment the team needed the last push, what happened? We build and build but then White Hart Lane – gone.

“We moved to Wembley and there were all the doubts about how we are going to behave. There was the example of West Ham in their first season [at the London Stadium], and many things in this process that stopped the evolution of the team about to win. Remember, we were unbeaten in the Premier League at White Hart Lane in our last season there. Nobody said what it meant to move to Wembley to create another project and not only this – we were going to play only one season at Wembley and now it’s nearly two seasons and no one says nothing.

“When Arsenal moved [to Emirates Stadium], people talked about massive problems, they are still paying, but Tottenham, with no history of winning … Our glory, I watch the [pre-match] video about the glory, it’s with Nicholson. It’s black and white. I watch it nearly every week and to create again that feeling, you need time. Four or five years, that’s nothing in the history of the club.”

Pochettino risked labouring the point about how Spurs were in a “different project” to the other top clubs. “The problem is you want to put Tottenham in a level when they are still not there,” Pochettino said. “It is completely unfair to charge the club like you would Emirates Marketing Project, Liverpool or Chelsea. We still need to finish our stadium. We need to create the basis to win.”

No it won't, if we win a cup it will written off as a lower level accomplishment. If when we will the the league or CL it will be that its a fluke and we can't repeat. Even then they will just that Poch has now proven himself and should move to a big club.
Negativity sells.

You’re right.

I am angry with his statement above. WTF!! I will blame him especially in his early years at Spurs - He dissed the cups. I accept it was tough for Spurs to win at Chelsea but to say we have no history of winning - Hello - we have won a trophy at least every decade!!

It sounds like even he is getting tired of the narrative now, he really shouldn’t have to reinforce the amazing job he has and continues to do with us. Of course we all want to win a trophy but it’s never been more difficult domestically and we are still in the middle (and ahead of schedule, on the pitch at least!) of getting ourselves into a position to regularly compete for four trophies every season.

The only question mark for me is in what was arguably our best 11 for a long time, some players have improved further still but we have lost Walker and Dembele with question marks over Eriksen and Toby. I’m concerned that a combination of available resources and our recent track record of player purchases means that we will struggle to replace them and possibly take a dip before the stadium income kicks in.

It may be that poch’s kryptonite is identifying new players or levy’s is paying the going rate for his number one choice. Poch’s level of control is a key part of his link with us so although I think we’d benefit from a sporting director to bridge this gap I’m not sure if this would unsettle the manager unless it was his decision.

As much as I’d love a new signing to give us another dimension in midfield renewing Eriksen would be worth over 100m as a club as it would cost at least that to replace him, let alone the intangible cost of his proven fitness levels and integration levels. I dread to think how much the loss of Toby would cost as if he goes domestically he strengthens any top 6 team instantly.

I think that statement was bound to land badly, but if we win something on average every 10 years he still has a while to match the historic accomplishments when arguably the club was more dominant financially.

Also we tend to win things in batches, hopefully the same will happen under poch’s tenure. If somehow we won the league or CL that would be worth a lot more in terms of accomplishment but I honestly believe we have as much chance of the latter as a domestic cup if we have our best players fit at the right times.

I think the statement he’s made is because hes frustrated too. With the Press and the factors out of his control this season.

I agree, it does not come across well.

You say he dissed the cups but in reality he seems to get to a semi final every season.

But if his chairman is not going to provide him with the big bucks to buy top quality players then I question whether or not Poch is at fault.

Besides I can understand while Poch would find qualifying for the CL important, because if we do not we may very well lose key players the way we lost Berbatov and Keane after winning the League Cup and not making the CL
