Lack of trust + insatiable need for speed = disaster

Looking at many of the stories currently reverberating around our planet, it has struck me that the way public trust in communities such as science and law enforcement has been eroded (and the way in which agitators continue to widen the chasms) is actually terrifying if you ponder it for too long.
We have vast swathes of people who genuinely don't trust science, or scientists, insisting that they're all out to fleece us any which way they can. Add this distrust to the growing societal need for fast, quick answers on any issue, and it is a disaster. There is an almost insane distrust in academia, and there is both a distrust and lack of patience in any action which requires time and close analysis to produce conclusive answers to complex issues.
It is literally nuts!
The only way I deal with it is to recognise how little control I really have, and live my life as the best person I can be on a local level.
Interested in others thoughts on this (admittedly wide) topic of discussion...

Post Covid this part of society has become worse. Beyond the lack of trust and lack of belief in science or medicine as an example, they who speed at which people want to jump on a half story to be hateful as quick as they can is MENTAL

I'm on the fence with this one actually. If I keep it safe and stick to football, I'm a strong believer that we should always push back on things we don't agree with. The Infantino nonsense this week is a good example. The shocking job that Howard WEbb and PGMOL are doing is another. However small our voice is, I think it is right to speak up. It all counts.

Now for the caveat.....

Where it gets grey area for me is where I don't have the cycles in my life to be informed. That is mostly where I struggle and take a massive step back on topics I used to enjoy. Politics mostly fits that category for me. I try to stay out of convo's as it just pulls me back in and I end up spending ages trying to catch up. Current affairs is about as deep as I go.

Trust has to be earned. Paticuarly when it’s been proven that the sectors you mentioned in academia, science and law enforcement continuously lie to us and are so easily manipulated my money. Add in the government and media to that.

To put a left spin on it. Gary Stevenson is currently the most prominent economic voice of the left and is heavily critical and distrustful said academia relating to economics. He discusses his expirience at Oxford when studying his masters in great detail and extremely distrustful of them.

Is his distrust insane? Or are his criticisms legitimate?

The lack of trust in scientists and academia is not evenly spread across the ideological divide. Trust in scientists has become sharply divided along partisan lines, particularly in the US. It is no coincidence that proto-fascists go after education and institutions of higher education in particular.

He doesn't distrust them.

He just thinks they are out of touch and not very smart.

Trust has to earned, doesn't matter who it is.
There's too many take it or assume it as a right.
Depends what and who it is TBH.

If I was distrustful of Dr's, medicine and health science I wouldn't likely be here given an illness last year.

I think this seemingly new found "question everything, trust no one" is a massively unhealthy way to live, not least on peoples mental health.

Genuine question. How do you define 'media' today? I do not think media in the traditional sense of the word exists. For me, media has become editorial and op-eds which reflect either the outlets viewership or benefactors.
There will always come a point where trust will require a leap of faith to an extent, a sense of trustworthiness versus a list of credentials. Sadly, we are at a point where more often than not, years of study and knowledge is being fudged off for the opinion of, say, a podcast host.

For me, the biggest issue regarding the lack of trust/need for speed equation we find ourselves in is that it supersedes politics and only fully embraces economic return for a very select percentage of the world. It feels to me that the endgame of this equation is usually an enormous amount of capital, power, or both for a very minuscule amount of people, who continue to be divided and pitted against each other via various 'information' platforms and populated 'agendas'. Left, right, whatever. At the very top of the economic table they DGAF about such trivialities.

This is the result of "americanisation". Trust no one but yourself (and/or your favourite 0 IQ tik tok influencer). Helping and trusting other people is bad socialist behaviour.

It's actually insane the way many belive everything some totalt random person the Internet says, but mistrust what 100s of people, that have studied the particular subject for multiple years say.

This is the part which is really what baffles me. People not trusting their Drs or medical professionals but trusting a random guy (usually AI) online who says that they should not be trusting their Drs as they are all involved in global conspiracy. I am just giving a random but true example.

Twitter fascinates me for this reason, even if you look at Musk who was taken to task for all the falsehoods he spouted about the UK, how many people are trusting him for what he says whilst ignoring facts?

For me its not even about trust, people are just clearly just believing rhetoric's that suit their agenda rather than listen to sanity. If it was about lack of trust people like Andrew Tate would not have so many followers (ironically all who claim to have trust issues)

Ultimately I think people went down rabbit holes during Covid and haven't come back

This is the saddest part. It really does feel like that, from the realities in front of your face and a gut feeling.

Money eh, what a construct.

This. I can't keep up with it all. I probably consume more alternative than mainstream media now a days, and find myself balancing on the edges between what sounds very fantastical and the other more balancing part of the spectrum - which is interesting. I often find myself wanting to believe something, but there's always (as far as I know) a skeptic in me that kicks me in the back of the head to perhaps not draw any conclusions just yet. But the will is there! I want to believe the incredible! "I knew it all along, the world must be better than this"! And I guess frustration for many can come out through believing the alternative stories rather than the official ones, which are often way more boring and needing of more patience.

We're all seemingly getting sick of this world, but we all have different boogeymen to blame for it all.

I think that's simply because everything from a media pov is largely delivered from the critical, negative, complaining, outrage angle.($$££) And sadly, that's a big part of people's daily consumption. You are what you eat after all.

BUT that is a media construct. If you lived without it you'd find good stuff.... probably right under your nose/outside your front door.....you know, where the real world happens ;) x

Social media and TV have given access to many opinions which challenge our views but they are easily manipulated by controlling elements of our society.
Can anyone trust anything governments, or multinational companies say?
This week I saw vertrans of the nuclear tests in the Pacific still trying to get the truth of why they and their families are suffering illness which may be attributed to the test but MoD are deny there are any problems. I'm not sure I've seen an government link the nuclear testing to the climate change debate, we are all supposed to believe the deadly reaction just blow away in the wind and made little impact on us and the planet. There are probably plenty of scientific reports commissioned to to say "nothing to see here"
You just need to look at the issues Grenfell Tower, Post Office managers, Water companies, criminal police officials, etc.
Then look at the type of people who are being elected to public office. These all erode trust in our society.

Another angle that needs to be mentioned here is we are automatically thinking we are talking about adults.

Many many people carry traits/ behavioural patterns from their childhood. If you do nothing about it via self work or therapists etc they will persist, probably forever. Repeating patterns, anyone?

Relatable to this thread...Trust issues is one, not being able to deal with authority is another. Unless you tried to work on this in adulthood, you're still emotionally a child in these areas. It's locked in.

SM comes along and it unknowingly to someone with these issues is the biggest negative that could happen. Conversely they subconsciously are feeling it's a positive. They can feed it, they find their tribe, their silo, their rabbit hole and they find people just like them, with the same issue. The behaviour then feels normal, even justified.....and biggest of all CONSTANT!.

Look around in your own group of family and friends as an exercise ....(you'd have to know someone pretty well) to see how the roots of their behaviours have migrated to modern times and media.

I think it comes down to what you want in life?

I have recently, I say recently, in the last 10 years found myself making peace with life and that I believe we are here for 3 score and 10 if lucky, with that my goal is to get the best from life and set my own goals for what I believe signifies a fulfilled life for me.

Fretting about Big Brother, Chem Trails, Vaxx theory or if cash is king seems a waste of head space

Family, friends, health.......the real essence of life
