These things will always pop up around international fixtures as the foreign press will be questioning their 'star' players as to why they aren't playing regularly for their clubs and I don't expect players to say they're happy sitting on the bench. You've then got the added bonus things being misconstrued when our press translate the interviews/quotes

I would suggest that Poch is happy that he is not satisfied spending all this time on the bench. He has disrespected neither his manager nor his club so there is nothing for Poch to frown about.

We are only allowed 7 subs so we had CCV to cover the right sided CB role and Davies to cover LB and the left sided CB role?

Hopefully. I'm fearing the worst though, that there's been some Adebayor-esque bust up (can't imagine it with good boy Wimmer though) and Poch, and that he's on his way out. Which would be an awful shame, as he was excellent last season.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is adamant Kevin Wimmer remains in his plans despite leaving the defender out of his squad to face Bayer Leverkusen.
Wimmer did not even make the bench as Spurs drew 0-0 at the BayArena to remain second in Champions League Group E.
Instead, Pochettino chose Eric Dier to replace the injured Toby Alderweireld at centre half and 18-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers was named on the bench.
Wimmer impressed last season when given a run of games while Jan Vertonghen was out injured but the Austrian has been all-but ignored so far this term, making just one appearance against Gillingham in the EFL Cup.
“Why are you confused? You are creating an issue that doesn’t exist,” Pochettino said.
“You say it’s a big problem for the supporters and media are very concerned. His situation was (he was) out of the 18 players. I need to take a decision about that.
“When did I tell you he wasn’t in my plans? I’m very honest with you. When a player is not in my plans, I tell you quickly but first I tell the player. He’s in my plans.
“When I put him on the bench, another player needs to be put out. Tell me which player you’d switch with him?”
It means Wimmer is effectively now fifth-choice centre-back at Tottenham and he admitted during the international break this has been a “difficult” period for him.
Dier and Carter-Vickers appear to be the preferred back-ups for Alderweireld on the right side of central defence while on the left behind Vertonghen, Ben Davies offers cover both at left-back and in the centre.
“I’m the manager and I always need to find balance on the bench,” Pochettino said.
“Ben Davies can play as a centre-back or as a full-back. I need another right, not another left. If something happens with Dier or (Kieran) Trippier, I need a right foot.
“So the decision is to give balance to the bench and the team if something happens.”

I read somewhere this morning that Wimmer travelled with the squad but just wasn't selected in the final 18.
Also, can anyone remember anything written way back when we signed him about how Wimmer is the type to need longer than most to get to peak fitness, if he has a layoff?
As in his build is such that he constantly has to watch he doesn't become unfit very quickly?

Cameron Carter Vickers might be higher rated for long term potential at the moment. Another challenge for Wimmer if he wants to become a regular starter for us, but not insurmountable.

One issue that is bubbling at the club – and which relates to Dier’s involvement at centre-half – is the status of Kevin Wimmer, the Austria international, who joined from FC Köln in a £4.3m deal last year.
Wimmer stepped into central defence alongside Alderweireld last season, when Vertonghen was out injured, and he acquitted himself well. But he now finds himself behind not only Alderweireld and Vertonghen in the central defensive pecking order but Dier and the 18-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers – who was named on the bench in Leverkusen ahead of him. Wimmer has made only one appearance this season – in the EFL Cup win over Gillingham.
Pochettino explained that his preference for Carter-Vickers was driven by the need to balance the squad. He said that the requirement for Wimmer on the bench was not as pressing because he already had left-footed defensive cover there in the shape of Ben Davies. He wanted right-footed defensive cover and that is why he went for Carter-Vickers.
There was surprise in Leverkusen, which is one of the neighbouring towns to Cologne, as to why Wimmer was not in the squad. The 23-year-old has suggested that he might have to consider his future in January if his situation does not improve and he has been linked with a return to FC Köln.

He's a right-sided CB. As is Dier. The only cover on the left is Wimmer. Davies can cover too, but I do not see him as the long-term option when Jan is not up to par any longer.
Here's how I am seeing the CB progression:
- CCV is Toby's back-up and slots in when Toby is past his prime, at which point CCV will be 23-24.
- Wimmer is Jan's back-up and slots in when Jan is past his prime, at which point he'll be 25-26.
- Dier is not a long-term CB option, but rather will slot in for Wanyama when Dembele is past his prime with Wanyama playing more of a Dembele role. Or he could play the Dembele role, which I agree he is not a like-for-like.
Davies continues to be a rotation option at LB and, given how much we rotate our FBs, will get plenty of game time to keep him happy. He will be named to the bench to cover two positions (LB and LCB) on occasion, but I see that as the exception rather than the norm.

@alekaras - I don't think Wimmer will wait around for Jan to go 'past his prime' - that's the issue I have with that CB progression list. I think Poch was being entirely honest with his Wimmer 'outburst' - I also think that means that Wimmer is likely off sooner or later, because the Toby-Jan partnership can't be broken up when fit (at least not for the next 2-3 years), and Wimmer's too good to rot away outside the matchday squad waiting for Jan to get injured/lose fitness.
I have higher hopes that CCV will fit into your planned progression. But I think, given the stigma around having an unduly young CB partnership, that we'll be buying Wimmer-age back-up defenders for that LCB slot for a while until Toby and Jan lose their edge and we can promote CCV + whoever the LCB backup happens to be at that time into the primary role full-time.
I have higher hopes that CCV will fit into your planned progression. But I think, given the stigma around having an unduly young CB partnership, that we'll be buying Wimmer-age back-up defenders for that LCB slot for a while until Toby and Jan lose their edge and we can promote CCV + whoever the LCB backup happens to be at that time into the primary role full-time.
