football with "pace" - do we ?

Pace will be more useful for when we're up against stronger sides - which is the one area we can make a big improvememt in points wise. We showed against Madrid and Dortmund and to a lesser extent Liverpool that quick breakaways can be devasting in such encounters (whilst also giving the opponents something to worry about if they plan to dominate high up the pitch) and lets face it all things being equal we're always likely to be up against 5 strong(er) sides in the league so perfecting our counter attacking game will be key to us out-performing our financial constraints.

I think that we've shown this season that we are a good counter-attacking side when the opposition leaves space for us to do this.

Good but plenty of room for improvement still, another Son like option in attack would be great and i think with the targetting of N'Jie N'Koudou Sissoko and now Zaha it goes someway to suggest it's something Poch wants too, maybe

Chelsea won't attack properly, it's not in their DNA, Mourinho too.

Liverpool home and away, City home and away, Arsenal away will all have space. Then any top CL teams that underestimate us. It's not a huge number of games per season.

It's as much as any other type of fixture where we can make gains - and personally i want to see us beating those sides and going deep in the CL - having a strong Counter puts us in a much better position to be able to do that.

Id put our first strongest defense (Alderweireld Vertonghen Sanches with Wanyama and Dierin front) up against any attack in Europe and be confident of keeping us in the game - give our attack another pacy outlet (like Mahrez) to play alongside Kane and Son and id fancy us to go very very far in the CL.

I think that guile is more useful than pace when it comes to unlocking tightly packed defences.

Want to see some pictures of my cat? Pace per se isn't necessarily so important, but son's acceleration/explosivity/sudden increase in speed and/or direction have been crucial for us on several occasions this season, and the last. But you could argue we have that with GKN, and he hasn't put it much to use. So yeah, you're probably right. :D

I think that's all true.

The downside is that a player like Mahrez would ruin our press (one of the reasons our defence is so good) and would probably be a very expensive second fiddle to Son, Alli and possibly Lamela in other matches.

We probably wouldnt be relying on the press in the games im talking about and whoever we sign be it Mahrez/Zaha/whoever would either have to fit in to our normal game or face being used as a specialist for certain situations only - our first team is strong so we wont be relying on any new attacker to be playing week in week out.

I dont think anyone is saying "I dont want pace", which is relevant before this thread descends that far!

As an option, pace would be a great tool to have. As youve gone on to say, options for different scenarios, I agree completely.

Just in general, for me, speed of thought > speed of foot.

And, more specifically to us, "lacking pace" is only really an issue in very specific situations.

In general I dont think pace is an issue in our side.

That being said, a Zaha or Mahrez would be most welcome for me.

This ^ This^^ AND especially THIS "Zaha or Mahrez would be most welcome"

This thread is about as worthwhile as the one discussing 'Corners'...

Pace is useful if harnessed the right way and played in a certain system or style.

Quickness of ball movement is an effective and largely more well rounded strategy.

Having the option of 'raw' pace off the bench could help as an alternative, given the system we play, but I don't know that it's something we need desperately.

Give me a clever, incisive passer in combination with a striker who excels in football intelligence and superb positioning over someone like Darren fudging Bent.. He had 'raw' pace by the way.

Having fast players playing off of those intelligent passers makes their job easier though dont you think and can help to exploit space more effectively. It's not an either/or situation really and i think, for the reasons already stated, that it would be a key compinent to getting better results against our rivals domestically, and in Europe more consistently

Funnily enough, while each have pace they are very different players.

Mahrez has more guile, more finese. Zaha has insane physicality and ball skills.

It would just ask more questions of the better defences e.g. Leicester were all over chelsea on Saturday and should been out of sight at half time.

cost of either?

Kane would love this type player and the purchase it would speak volumes of our ambitions to all our top players.

Both Mahrez and Zaha like to shoot and are moderately greedy. Kane likes players that pass to him in the box. It is noticeable that both Kane and Alli will sometimes slightly overhit certain passes, meaning the recipient is able to get into the box but has to cross/pass rather than being through on goal.

Both would improve our bench/options.
And show intent!!!

I think it is a combination of pace and quick incisive pass and movement. That is what makes City and Liverpool so lethal in attack.
