Football Trivia Question of the Day

Wednesday 19th December 2012:

How many straight white lines are needed to mark-out a regulation football pitch?

I count 17

4 for the boundary
3x2 for each goal square
3x2 again for the penalty box
1 for the half way line

Ah, 25 then.

Yes, 25: Centre line, two touchlines, two goallines, six six-yard lines, six penalty area lines and eight corner lines.

In addition, six lines are needed to mark-out the technical areas (if required) and circular or part-circular lines are needed to complete the pitch markings.

What are these corner lines you speak of?

A mark may be made off the field of play, 9.15 metres (10 yds) from the corner arc and at right angles to the goal line to ensure that this distance is observed when a corner kick is being taken.
