So you think it is an equal gamble to sign a player that has never played PL football or to sign a player who has played PL football and shown they can cope with the pace and physicality?

Well I have already explained that, I think it absolutely is because I don't think any two set of circumstances are the same here or abroad once you leave a set up you thrived in

We are signing two players from City whose best performances have taken place abroad, in Savinho case his only good sustained form came abroad (I take Marmoush has been very good here but I don't think its a greater body of work than abroad), so I think my general point stands and people are celebrating (rightly) players who's proven form looks better abroad than being PL proven and we are paying 150m for them

Do you think De Zerbi shares your view?

I dont care in terms of the context of this forum, we are having a conversation between us, not RDZ, so can we refrain from these attempts to shutdown conversations with nonsensical points???

Top scorer for the season, his goal won us the Europa league and we sold him for only a small loss.
Our top scorer last season
A player that looked pretty good in his first season under Ange and has been difficult to judge since due to his injuries last season

To continue your silly game…. Ndombele, Lo Celso, Soldado.
Let's be clear this is your silly game:)

ie there are always good/bad examples on both sides of the argument...so nullifies the point of the argument in the first place

OK so you answered one question, you don’t feel the gamble is any different. I disagree with you but you’re entitled to your view.

I’m not trying to shut down a conversation, just asking a question (that you have avoided).

Let me ask ithe question a different way. Why do you think De Zerbi has exclusively signed players from the PL this season?

Yeh, We could go through the entire history of the "serious clubs" and suspect the success v failure marks on transfers are fairly balanced.
Let's end by saying our best ever foreign signing in recent times looked like he was struggling with the demands of the PL for the whole of his first season, and asked Poch that following summer to leave. The rest is history.

Avoiding a question about if RDZ shares my view? Seriously? We aint 12 and Im not debating him, I am debating with you

But for the record and to quench your thirst for a reply, he likely doesnt share my view based on this window, but i suspect not every signing that improves us will come from the PL like I dont suspect every signing this summer will be a success, so we would likely both be wrong....and right

Joe Lewis could have pulled the plug at any time like the kids did. But Levy ran it the way Joe wanted and they align because Levy was Joe's protege and they largely think the same way about business. As I understand Levy did at times express the need to invest more on the pitch and Joe did not support that.
doesn't make sense to sack levy then...even if levy didn't have the cash he could have accepted a dilution of his shares

It’s my silly game to say that I think signing players who have already proven they can handle the pace and physicality of the PL is less of a gamble? I’m not sure what even makes that a game, let alone a silly one?

I thought the silly game was naming selective players to try to prove/disprove the above but I suppose the rules for this silly game are set by you ;)

Kinda feel this debate has taken a bit of a mad turn. Like…of course signings from abroad can work, of course proven PL signings can work. Is it more likely that proven PL players will be up to speed to perform and achieve results more quickly? Yes. Is there value from abroad? Also yes.

The point is surely that under Levy, we never would have had this summer. We might have signed the odd big money player, but we were never seriously competing with the biggest clubs for proven PL talent. We didn’t want to pay the wages, so we had to gamble. And we very nearly did it that way in 2019.

I look at this summer sort of like Liverpool’s after Hicks and Gillet. They went from signing mid table players to starting to compete seriously again under FSG. It doesn’t mean it’s all going to happen for us this season, but I think it’s undeniable that having better, proven, players is more likely to lead to success. It’s clearly much less of a gamble. So long as we can afford the wages, we should be fine!

23 minutes until the season starts and this can be parked until everyone gets bored in the next international break!

that doesn't stand up to scrutiny, the only player we have signed this season who is PL proven and at their peak is Tonali

I think this is about paying the wages. It’s also why Senesi and Robertson wanted to sign for us despite a terrible last two league campaigns. We are now a destination that good, proven players want to join. If you make the bar a proven player who is also at their exact peak then there’s like a handful that move in any window. It doesn’t take away from the fact that JPVH, Fernandes etc are not top signings because we got them ahead of other top clubs.

paying too high of a wage is a bad thing
