Eberechi Eze

Maybe more money up front, maybe a bigger fee spread out over 4 payments rather than the 3 in the previous deal? I don't know, just trying to work out if we're really serious about getting him.

The release clause doesn't mean they can't do it a different way. Just if a club does it that way palace have no choice but to accept the deal.

All depends on the details
In Spain it’s all up front
Here they have barely been used and I’m sure at some point were deemed unenforceable under UK employment law, but that’s clearly not the case

The point is that a selling club aren't beholden to the terms of the release clause should they decide they want to sell irrespective of the clause - they are free to discuss terms on a sale should they want. The clause is there so if there's a buyer that is prepared to meet the terms then the selling club has to accept regardless if they want to sell.

It may be that Palace were holding out for the release clause being met while it was in place - if another club were to come in then that would make sense as you can say to all parties this is the fee and payment terms as per the clause and then maybe one would pony up.

Now the clause has expired and the player has supposedly set his sights on Spurs it could have weakened their position - or it could mean another club comes in and matches/betters what we are willing to pay.

It can mean many things could happen with the key being that clause meant match it and you can buy him
Now it’s all about deals and negotiations
