Djed Spence

Did Djed mention his religion or was it raised by a journo? If the former, that's fine. If the latter, why? There's absolutely no need to single out a protected characteristic. Just let the lad focus and enjoy his debut.

Does anyone have a link to the full conversation?

I have only seen some quotes, but it looks like he was asked about it as he didn't know he was the first Muslim to represent England.

Also this

He regularly posts about his faith on Instagram.

He's OK wearing it. And GHod do we need people to see us as more than animals.

Last few weeks have felt like it more then ever. Never felt less welcome in my own country

He has mentioned it loads on his socials, been a thing for a while.

Good luck to the lad and well done for being proud of who you are and where you come from.......

only when there is a positive spin around it, but when it’s not the case then it’s hidden. I think that’s where the balance needs addressing

That's great that he's confident and strong enough to do that.

I'm just uncomfortable with what feels like an insincere motive behind the question. The Djed quote above shows his maturity and openness to all humankind but the BBC headline is, 'Spence hopes to inspire as first Muslim England player', which he isn't quoted as saying in the article. It feels like stirring the pot.

It is a good story, it is a bit odd that there aren't more English muslims that come into pro-football. Partly i guess many are of south asian background and cricket is a competing priority. I thought Hamza Choudary looked promising early on in his career and he played for England u21s but he never kicked on....

I think it will change big time. At my level there's been a huge influx of British South Asians (both indian and pakistani) over the last 5 or so years, which is something very new. Its been really good to see. Some very decent players too

We've got some kids here who should have made it. Matter of time. Cricket there is incredible talent and purely on that basis, South Asians are massively under represented in first class cricket in my view.

My dream is to see an ethnic Pakistani play for Englands football team.

When Owais Shah debuted for England I was ecstatic. What a day it was.
