Cristian Romero

Tonight is going to be a huge test of the new captain.
PSG have 5 attackers darting everywhere, plus overlapping full backs, so organising our defence+Palhinha+Bentancur is going to be a mammoth effort.
Hopefully we don't give away any silly penalties.

Hoddle saying that Romero should’ve done better for both of PSG’s goals, as the header leading to their opener could’ve been directed away from centre of pitch plus he pushed up instead of sprinting to the front post in lead up to their equaliser.

After the fact experts everywhere

The issue on the second is that we didn't push with him. It was such a fine margin, if Spence even takes a half step up Dembele is offside thanks to Romero moving up.

Spence was the highest up the pitch out of our back 5 at the moment Hakimi passes the ball to Dembele and Romero should perhaps not be trying to play offside when there’s no pressure on the passer.

Bentancur either too exhausted to sprint to the near post space which Mickey has vacated (in order to prevent Dembele from having a clear run on goal) or he’s got half an eye on Ruiz, whilst Danso is staying ahead of Mbaye on the far post.

Fine margins as you say but I don’t know why Romero stopped chasing back to at least try and distract Ramos, as Danso ended up closest to him when he nodded the cross home. I know it’s being pernickety but I expect perfection from our World Cup wining captain 😁

Interesting looking at the frames...will have to watch the reply real-time to see if I saw what I actually saw. Looks like the sort of marginal stuff Frank was speaking of.
That first frame also shows that Tel is basically not doing anything; even a sprint back to help out Spence could've delayed the progression by a second or two.

I saw that Tel didn't help Spence when he was out numbered by three players. Not sure who else could've come back to help but we needed one more body there.

Also, Romero was covering the through ball plenty until he went down with cramps.

I have read that he had a nightmare first half, constantly passing to Burnley players...

How did he improve in the second half? Was there a change of tactics, e.g. asking him to keep things simple etc?

Not really a surprise. Doubt he’d have got the captaincy if he wasn’t going to commit. And with the captaincy he’d expect a good jump in wages I’d have thought - which would need a new contract.
Great news all the same though.

As one who campaigned for him throughout, I’m very happy that we have him tied down to a new contract and he’s captain. Hopefully that will stop people saying that his heart lays elsewhere. He’s a top top centre back and it’s great that we have him leading the way for us.

I am looking forward to Levy and co to make this an even better week over the next few days. I would like to think that the club explained to him that we are going to be ambitious this summer.
