He is the captain, no doubt. No one else has his career.

I read today that this was about to be the new era of no superstars at Spurs, but I felt like screaming at the screen, that they don't come much bigger than Romero. We may not have a world beating forward in the side now but we are blessed with a monster of a centre half who in his own way is a world class talent. I suspect our next worldie is likely to be Bergvall.

I think people on here do give him the credit he deserves to be honest. The only issue of contention is when people start branding him world class, when he constantly has a brain fart in him and it's not an exaggeration to say that.People really don't give him the credit he's due. The man is a World Cup-winner. And all of his teammates - including the greatest player to have ever lived in Leo Messi - respect and recognize him as one of the best defenders on the planet.
Yes he's had fitness issues. Yes he's had the occasional screw-up (who hasn't).
But at the end of this coming season, Cristian Romero will have given us 5 years of his career, during which he won the World Cup and dragged us to our first trophy in 17 years. And all while we've had one of the most topsy-turvy spells of the last quarter-century, going from 4th to 8th to 5th to 17th.
That's commitment. Not every player shows the sort of loyalty to us that Son did. But it's enough that a world-class player gave us five years - and if he signs on for a few more, he'll be up there with Son, Kane et al when the time comes to evaluate Spurs legends. If he doesn't, he'll leave next summer with our gratitude.
Yeah of course, I don't think anyone has ever suggested the expectation of a world class player is to not make an error? Or that overall he is not a good defender?I think every centre back makes errors. We just notice Romero’s more as he’s our player so we focus on what he does. I dare say that supporters of other teams notice their own players make mistakes.

But a world class player is generational, Romero is not that - he is at a level we have had a few times in our recent past. He is on the same level as a Vertonghen or Alderweireld and not on the same level as the arguably world class Ledley.
Where as a Harry Kane who undoubtedly was world class - we would do well to find another of his ilk in the next 50 years....
Tbh there's a few things I disagree with there, but I don't want to maintain a debate about this and appear negative toward Romero as I do rate him. I just think he needs to add consistency to be world class.Romero is more individually talented than Verts or Toby, but the Romero-VdV pairing cannot hold a candle to the Toby-Verts pairing. What made those two great was their telepathic understanding with each other, which elevated both their games.
None of our defensive pairings over the last fifty years compare to Toby-Verts in their prime, with perhaps only one exception - Woodgate-Ledley in the second half of the 08/09 season. But that was pretty fleeting.
As for whether he's generational, I'd say he is. I think injuries and the defensive fragilities of Angeball have made us forget how insanely good he can be at locking down attackers. And like I said, Argentina players (including Leo Messi) think he's the best defender in the world, which has to count for something.
