Cody Gakpo

He did track back
But I also think it was a tactical thing to keep him higher up
I remember the game he got his head split open defending
He did more than people ever want to give him credit for

Sorry mate, I saw plenty of him not track his runners back when the opposite side did. He was massively lazy.

Loved going forward, hated tracking back

Yeh if anything the critique of Gakpo is that he is like a really good version of Brennan Johnson that scores a lot of goals but doesn’t offer enough to the team overall.
He is more versatile than Johnson imo
Where he is sinailr is his shot to goal return is high
That’s a rare thing for wide players especially ones we have

Hi lack of tracking back was horrendous

But what was the root cause?

I know people jump on fans for daring to suggest that some players didn't buy into Ange's system. What they forget is that it involved so may sprints backwards as our press lines were broken. What you are referring to could well be where Johnson just went on strike with the tactics. I don't know if you can think back further, but Sonny lost the plot with Jose. Our club legend made it very clear in his body language and on-pitch positioning that he wasn't going to play as an up and down wing back for anyone.

I have some sympathies with Johnson for what was being asked by Ange. He had Porro either way forward or inverted into centre mid and then expected Johnson to make 80 yards sprints backwards.

Don’t agree
But hey he isn’t here now anyway
I like Gakpo though
Thought he was a bit meh in Holland but he stepped up here which is massively credible if we’re buying within the league

It's hard playing with porro imo. Lamal found that out in the WC.
