Brennan Johnson

Back to his utterly pointless and toss best today
There is no "back to" there was no appreciable difference between yesterday's match and the weekend.

The only difference is that he skied the low cross across the box chances he had against Frankfurt but against Southampton he scored it. That's it, he was no better on or off the ball. He contributed no more or no less in general play.

He finished his chance on Sunday but missed it today, that's it, that is the difference between the two performances. This shouldn't surprise you, this is what he is as a player.

A midfield schemer who can constantly take men on via dribbling AND has vision would see the best of Johnson. So many times he's free and oin space but no-one passes it to him to use his pace. Of course, he's not as good as, say, Odobert one-on-one but still, play to the guys strengths FFS.
Solanke, him are looking more and more ineffective as time has gone on under Ange's system...sigh...

I do agree as much as I don't rate Johnson (I don't at all 😅) we don't really use him effectively. Our setup actively negates his few better attributes and plays him in manner that totally doesn't suit him.

We need a switch passer in midfield if we intend on player the poor controlling, none drinking capable Johnson. He needs passes into space free of defenders and to be fair to him he does find himself in open space but we never pass it to him.

We have Maddison for that

Well then, oh boy...mr crab was at it again last night.
Tbf, he himself would benefit from someone who passes quickly when our players are in space and/or can dribble past a man
He is so frustrating
If I was Ange I’d ban him from leaving the opposition half
His mobility is shocking
His creativity in the final third is very good
If we’re playing him there has to be a trade off
Doesn’t help he cannot pass to the left

He’s in the team to get on the end of chances. He’s certainly not in the team because of his creativity or guile. Nothing wrong with that if that’s the limit of what you expect from him. The problem is when he doesn’t score he contributes very little. Similar to Erling Haaland or Raheem Sterling but not as prolific. The other problem is our forwards as a unit aren’t prolific or we don’t create enough for them.

this is more ange than johnson
same reason why sonny doesn't cut in and shoot, instead waits for the overlap

ange wants to compress play in the final third and find a way to thread the ball in front of a crowded goal
we play fast running back in panic to defend. not in attack.

I'd like him to concentrate on Improving his first touch (awful) and his general touch and control (really poor).
Sure. But in terms of 40 shots, they are good shots.
I reckon he actually has decent-enough touch and control but just cannot show it, for whatever reason. He grew up in a football family, he has technique but is just unable to display it for some reason.

he looked better in 2022;
progresses the ball from midfield well, can lay either flanks and has an eye for goal
like son, needs space in front for freedom to use his unpredictable range of skllls
ange seems to employ him as a two trick pony - getting to the byline and receive crosses - becoming too predictable

its a step up when he joined but skill and confidence wise he seems to have gone backwards
he would do well under a better coach who appreciates his talent and doesn't use fullbacks to crowd the space in front of him

That's the same player.
None of his first touches there are close control; they are flicks or loose touches.
He's is good with pitch to run into - albeit he doesn't have dribbling ability, he's a direct runner.
But he's best when it's instinctive or running onto the ball - his best passes and shots all come from that.
He rarely looks "in control" of the ball - but is running onto the ball, even when he has the ball he knocks it to run onto
