Best Homegrown XI

Gutter Boy

Tim Sherwood
I was thinking about this while driving yesterday. What would our best historic XI be is made-up of homegrown players? It's not actually that great is it.

I'm not sure the status of our 60s and 70s players, but most of the obvious ones seem to have been bought in from somewhere.

I want strict definitions too, so no Danny Rose-type academy buy-ins. And also people who came through properly for us, so no Crook, Crouch, Redknapp, Clyne, Smith, Daniels etc.

This was what I had got to:

--------------------------Walker

Carr----------Campbell-----------King-----------?

Perryman------Hoddle---------Hazard-----------?

--------------Barmby--------Kane

The criteria should be they made their professional debut whilst being on spurs books (doesn’t mean its for us though)

Nice idea, I think Barmby was older than Rose when he joined us. A real shame we lost him as understand it to homesickness...

Barmby was never at another club though. Rose was a professional at Leeds and was bought for a £1m transfer fee

could go 3 at the back, perryman, campbell, king. Still have to bodge someone in on the left though, but only have to find one left-sided player then...

I think we would be stuck with putting somebody like Stephen Clemence at left back if you're not allowing Rose (although I think Rose spent enough of his formative years at Spurs for him to count, especially as he hadn't played first team football anywhere else before he joined us).

David Howells is the only other player I can think of that might be worthy of putting in the team. Giving something like the below:

--------------------------Walker
----------Campbell--------------------King
Carr-----Perryman-----Howells----Hazard--------Rose
---------------Hoddle-------------Barmby
----------------------------Kane

While Barmby was about the same age as Rose - Barmby signed with us at 16, Rose I think was 17 when he came from Leeds - Spurs were the first professional club to sign Barmby (initially on schoolboy terms due to his age), whereas we paid a transfer fee for Rose.

Barmby was the hottest property in the country when he was 15/16, partly because of his talent but also because he was the only member of the England youth team not to be on the books of a professional club. Barmby was represented by his Dad, who was quite smart in not letting Nicky sign schoolboy terms with any professional club. Of course that led to a scramble for his services when he turned 16. Literally every club in the top two divisions were trying to sign him. It was of course illegal to pay money to sign players on schoolboy terms back then and of course Spurs under Terry Venables and Irving Scholar would never have broken those sorts of rules, Barmby parents seemed to suddenly do rather well back then though. ;)

I think we should allow Rose in at lwb ;)

Our best homegrown LB from modern times would probably be Jamie Clapham. He got one game for us and played in the PL for Ipswich and Birmingham and even tasted UEFA Cup action for the former. I think Charlie Daniels at Bournemouth is a LB. He never managed any games for us.

It was his old lady ( who was a fair bit older then him) who wanted to move back north, she wore the trousers so he did as she told him.

@parklane1 will know plenty with his superior experience

A polite way of saying i am a old fart? :( There has been a few who could get in the team

Phil Beal ( who played all along the back during his time here.
Chris Hughton who although he went to collage and studied was training with us since he was 14.
Micky Hazard would be in with a shout.

John Pratt, Frank Saul, Joe Kinnear came from non league as a youngster, Jimmy Neighbour, Terry Naylor was a decent player as a defender.

Rose spent several years playing for and developing in the academy sides didnt he? Should be enough to qualify him for a homegrown side
