Berba, Modric, Rafa, Bale, Kane, Sonny...?

Which ones out of interest....for me everyone on that list would start in this current team
Not going through the whole list but Porro is better than Corluka, Romero and VdV are better than Dawson, the version of Gallas we got and Kaboul. Huddlestone would be great if it was walking football, but not good enough otherwise, would have Bentancur and Bergvall over him. There's others on the list too.

Corluka is a far better defender than Porro. Porro is a RWB not a RB. Similarly, Dawson, Gallas and Kaboul are simply better defenders than Romero and VDV. They could all play more than half the season also. Bergvall I think will be unbelievable for us. But he is raw and makes a lot of mistakes. He doesnt even play in Huddlestone's role either. Bergvall and Bentancur are both natural competitors to the Modric role alongside Huddlestone's sitting role. Bentancur has attempted to fill in for that role (not super effectively). Huddlestone would walk into the current team...although lets see more of how Paulinha gets on...

Porro is a better all round player, his defending is ok, could be better, just he wasn't playing like a defender last year. Dawson, Gallas, and Kaboul are better than Romero and VdV? Embarrasing. Gallas could play more than half a season? He played 61 times in the league across 3 years. He also was 33 and nowhere near the player he was at Chelsea and Arsenal. Kaboul also only played 89 games across 6 seasons. So neither could play, or warrented being played for half a season. The only reason Dawson looked decent at times was because he had King beside him. When King wasn't there he couldn't step up. Huddlestone's sitting role? He couldn't move to defend properly. Great passer of the ball but nothing else. Whatever about walking into the team, he definitely wouldn't run into it or anywhere else.

We finished 17th last season. Our players aren't as good as you think they are.

If anyone carrick. Class player that a lot of fans couldn't understand what he did.
I always found with the likes of Carrick and Modric you see a lot more of their influence when at a game, particularly when sat behind the goal watching them knit it all together from behind. You don’t see that on TV.

I took a non-Spurs fan to a game once. Home to Charlton in the FA Cup. 0-0 at half time and we’d barely created anything.

Modric came on at half time for Palacios and we were 3-0 up by the hour mark. He barely let Charlton touch the ball and was the orchestrator of all 3 goals without actually scoring (or assisting I suspect).

My friend said he didn’t realise how good he was until that game.

To me the way Bergvall carries himself he feels he is a difference-maker...I really hope that if we don't sign a 10, we play him there and persevere.
Absolutely on the first part. Still very young and who knows what will happen, but that "it" factor he definitely has it.

So far I think he's been more impressive a bit deeper than #10 and seems to get a bit lost in games as a #10. That may very well change over time.

Loved both Carrick and Modric (despite watching on TV). We've never really managed to replace what they gave us. Modric went on to be recognised as probably the best midfielder in the world so tough to replace.

Not quite the "marquee", "get people up on their feet" players I feel is the theme of this thread, but absolutely fantastic players that can have just as much of an impact.

We finished 5th the season before that with most of the same players...
A lot of that was smashing circa 25 points on the board in 10 games with very unusual tactics. The form in the second half of the season was poor and the defence was an obvious weakness - we conceded 61 goals. Over 1.6 goals a game. It did not feel like a good season to me come season end. More as we started fast then fell off badly.

They're not as bad as you think, and you way overestimate the likes of Dawson, Kaboul, Gallas (the version at Spurs) and Huddlestone. The teams they played in contained some world class players e.g. Bale, Modric, and King, that raised the level of the team. Stick the likes of them in the current team and it would be easily a top 4 team.

Guarantee we don't concede as many this year with mostly the same squad. You give the tactics as the reason that we got 25 points in the first 10 games, they're also the reason we conceded so many.

Clipped for future reference :D

I know they are not "defence first" players, but that is because we have ambitions to achieve more. They are decent defenders.
I don't think they are even decent defenders. Romero is on his day. But look, stuff like losing Vardy for Leicester's equaliser in our opening game last season. Was Romero's man that and he just switched off. Not good enough at this level in this league and it happens too often with him. Set the tone for his league season in many ways.

VDV - if he didnt have his recovery pace i think he'd look far worse than he does. Positionally and tactically in dont rate him, gets turned and sold a dummy too easily and he isnt fantastic in the air. Add in the fact that both FBs are converted WBs (and it shows) and yeah.....we aren't very solid even at full strength.

Yeah, there was a big difference. Almost like a different team with different players.

On a related note remember those stats of our points per game, matches won and goals against with Romero and VdV starting and without them?

To try to get the thread back on topic who will be the next name worthy of being included in Steff's list of marquee players (or yours).

I think Kudus could. If we get Savinho over the line I think he could too. Those would be the closest imo, with Bergvall, Odobert, Tel and Moore as other candidates.

Yeah i'm always a bit wary of stuff like that though as I like to overlay a bit of an eye test piece. We were shaky with Romero and VDV starting. We had some very poor defensive lapses with both of them there which cost us. They're our best centre-backs. So it gets even worse without them. Plus playing the high line we did without VDV's recovery pace and Romero's aggression is basically suicide.

Saying that, they'd both have to push on to convince me that they're good enough if we are wanting to get to where Levy says he wants to get to.

Bergvall has definitely shown the most promise for me.
