A look ahead to next season...

So, given I am often Chief Grumpypants, I like to complain a lot. End of this season I will give up my 2 STs. Nothing to do with costs, moreso the state of the club currently and the future pathway I see us on. Also modern football is crap and VAR has killed the fun of it. But i digress...

Am I too negative? I see a lot of posts of positivity that next season will be better (it can't be worse), but the point I want to discuss is how far off are we?

Tier 1: Liverpool, City, Arsenal - nowhere near them
Tier 2: Forest, Villa, Chelsea, Saudi Sportswashing Machine - feels very distant
Tier 3: The rest, the Palace, Brighton etc

Given the gap we need to close, I feel like at best, if we did some substantial work over the Summer, we would be either T2 or T3, perhaps inbetween. But that would require a lot of work that I do not see the Board doing. And on top of that, no other teams will stay still. So if anything, we would need to jump even further to bridge that gap, again, something the Board will not do.

So what do people think? There seems to be a lot of positivity for next season with a new manager likely in, but for me, I think we are so far off where we want to be, I cannot for the life of me see this being resolved within one or two seasons. No doubt some folks will point to Villa or Forest but again, those clubs made substantial improvements to the playing squad.

They also have ambitious owners with public targets, Marinakis at Forest for example has multiple times said he wants to win things. Our club will never be that ambitious and I am a big believer in the message from top down. It breeds that mentality and a large part of our failures stem from that culture in the club.

So anyway, I guess my point is, I think we are way off where people think we will be, and simply changing managers whilst it will improve, will not miraculously solve our ills. If people think this team will be pushing for CL spots next season, or even the season after, in my humble opinion I think no way. However, welcome people's thoughts on both side.

Why so positive? Why so negative?

Our squad is up there with Villa's and Saudi Sportswashing Machine's IMO. It just needs a rudder.

Remember City could well be starting the season on minus 80 points. And they are an ageing squad - their current fall-off isn't a fluke.

A lot depends on our remaining game(s) in the Europa. If we don’t win we’ve no European football next season so just 38 games + domestic cups. In that scenario we should clear out most of the old guard and allow our newer/younger players opportunity to develop. All under a new coaching staff of course.

We're far away from city, slightly closer to Liverpool and arsenal although still far away from them, but I don't think we are that far from villa, Saudi Sportswashing Machine or Chelsea.

With a new manager I can see us returning to anywhere between 7th and 3rd, certainly within two seasons.

But it's expectations that we as fans fail to manage.
I can't see us ever winning the PL in my life time, I'm 57 this year, other than a one off fluke.
1 in 100 chance say.

CL odds much better, 1 in 50 maybe, still not great.

As those are the comps we are focusing on as a club and that we as a fan base think are the only two worth winning that's a hell of a task.
Setting ourselves up to fail, easy to see how people get disillusioned.

I'm always pessimistic about our immediate future but optimistic about our long term future.

I think our squad is between 6-8th. Presuming we upgrade the manager and the talented youth show a bit of development that should be very achievable next season. One or two good buys could even push us higher.

You are all in cloud cuckoo land. We could easily get relegated next year.
We will need 5 or 6 quality recruits or i think we will be in the bottom 6 again. Im sure Romero will be sold, probably Bissouma too. Son is finished. The squad is thin and devoid of top top class players. Maybe VdV but thats it

Strange then that you are so Anti Ange if you think he has us where the quality of our team is (in your eyes)
