So, given I am often Chief Grumpypants, I like to complain a lot. End of this season I will give up my 2 STs. Nothing to do with costs, moreso the state of the club currently and the future pathway I see us on. Also modern football is crap and VAR has killed the fun of it. But i digress...
Am I too negative? I see a lot of posts of positivity that next season will be better (it can't be worse), but the point I want to discuss is how far off are we?
Tier 1: Liverpool, City, Arsenal - nowhere near them
Tier 2: Forest, Villa, Chelsea, Saudi Sportswashing Machine - feels very distant
Tier 3: The rest, the Palace, Brighton etc
Given the gap we need to close, I feel like at best, if we did some substantial work over the Summer, we would be either T2 or T3, perhaps inbetween. But that would require a lot of work that I do not see the Board doing. And on top of that, no other teams will stay still. So if anything, we would need to jump even further to bridge that gap, again, something the Board will not do.
So what do people think? There seems to be a lot of positivity for next season with a new manager likely in, but for me, I think we are so far off where we want to be, I cannot for the life of me see this being resolved within one or two seasons. No doubt some folks will point to Villa or Forest but again, those clubs made substantial improvements to the playing squad.
They also have ambitious owners with public targets, Marinakis at Forest for example has multiple times said he wants to win things. Our club will never be that ambitious and I am a big believer in the message from top down. It breeds that mentality and a large part of our failures stem from that culture in the club.
So anyway, I guess my point is, I think we are way off where people think we will be, and simply changing managers whilst it will improve, will not miraculously solve our ills. If people think this team will be pushing for CL spots next season, or even the season after, in my humble opinion I think no way. However, welcome people's thoughts on both side.
Why so positive? Why so negative?
