Transfer window thread?

Without wanting to offend, your issue seems to be impatience more than anything.

Me? Im looking at the last few seasons and still seeing continued progression, not a plateu or glass ceiling - so I cant really understand why you think we cant make the next level. We are a work in progress, and we are getting there, IMO.

And as you again point out - other teams will spend - in ways we cannot compete with. So why does it follow we should try and do what they do in getting a world class player (something that is entirely hypothetical, IMO, I simply dont think we can).

Especially when our approach has us with the best squad Ive ever seen in my time as a Spurs fan. As @billyiddo points out, our team is as good as any.

More expensive is not the same as better.

Man Utd spent £75m on Lukaku, would you honestly trade him for academy product Kane? (set to be "a Bale", if he isnt already).
£45m on Matic, would you trade him for £11m Wanyama?
£35m Lindeloff - against Sanchez? (I was going to say Alderweireld but Sanchez seemed the fairer comparison).

I do understand the desire for a next level player. I dont understand the insistence that player needs to be bought, when clearly what we do is working wonders.

There are very few players in this league I would trade for ours. And thats not bias, thats a measure of just how good we are right now. Another couple of seasons of adding depth and quality and where might we be?
Im not impatient at all. I said Im fine with us simply being a club who competes for top 4. We missed our chance to win the league when Leicester did, all the stars were aligned for us with the other big teams sleeping - that will never happen again.

I dont see the need for going through a load of individual transfers and comparing the better value, this isnt the point. The point is that we have in general a young squad who havent won anything. Having that one star who has won big trophies, operating at the very top level is only going to help improve the younger players and elevate those players and the club to the level we aspire to be at. Im not asking to go scattergun on a load of stars, just one to supplement our current crop of talented players.....

I disagree regarding Eriksen and Son but can concede Dele as more potential atm - Eriksen and Son both contribute on a fantastic level in terms of either creative output or goals and stack up well when compared to anyone in the league.

Being one of the best 2/3 teams consistently in the league over a reasonable period should be enough to challenge and win honors domestically - or do you think the only side who wins trophies is the single best side in the league each season?
I just cant even come close to agreeing, especially Son. Hes not even a guaranteed starter for us!

I previously said we challenge, but always fall short and are falling short again this season. Having these lovely stats of how we come top of the PL over two seasons doesnt win you the PL. How we had the most points in CL group doesnt win you the CL, as good as these things are.....

Mahrez would most likely find himself in exactly the same position as Son - honestly i think this is a MOTD situation with him, he'd be a good player to help strengthen the squad but dont see him being an automatic starter for us and improving the first XI the way you seem to talk him up as being.

Well yes in the two seasons previous that we could be considered one of the best teams in the league we have fallen short - does that mean that will always be the case?

I can get on board with what you're saying about Mahrez, although I do think he's better than Son hence winning Player of the Year. But I was referring to Bale when talking about a genuine world class star.

And yes, considering the two Manchester clubs were sleeping the past seasons, I do think we will always fall short if we dont invest in one special player. And Im fine with that.....

United and City will both have lulls again dont worry about that, Pep wont stick around forever and Mourinho never hangs around more than 3 seasons, he'll be gone soon enough and both clubs will churn through some managers until they get it right again

You advocate getting Bale in as a statement player, a mythical being who by virtue of being "world class" (whatever that means) will bring up the levels of all those around him, right?

The point I have been making, which you seem to miss is this - WHERE DID BALE COME FROM?

When WE sold him, for €100m, he was as good as any player on the planet. We have already had "that player" even though we had no right to (given our status/finances etc). Is that what he was when we got him?

Of course not. He was immensely talented, we bought him under the strategy we still employ, and under our care/guidance/chances offered he developed wonderfully and became that player.

Cnotinuing to follow that strategy we already have Kane on that path. And I would argue Alli, Eriksen, Sanchez (so far) and others. We are MAKING the players you want us to buy. Buying, of course, being something most likely beyond us, so the point is moot anyway.

However, making something takes time. And your insistence on us not being able to take the next step does indeed sound like impatience to me. Im looking at the team, and Im not thinking "I wish we spent £100m on a single player to elevate the side", Im thinking "I hope we spend enough on wages to KEEP these players together so I can see they day they reach their potential together".

I believe we have the player(s) you want currently in development. Just as I believe we will continue to buy players to follow that same path.

And again, I agree with @billyiddo , it is far from certain that the like of City and Utd will simply continue to dominate, despite the money they spend and the names they buy (seriously, impressed by Pogba yet?). We cannot operate the way they do, but it doesnt then follow that we cannot compete. They will have low periods, just as we will have high. They will have rubbish buys at high cost, just as we will have gems that are brilliant and yet cheap.

I dont know what stats you're looking at, but if you're telling me you think Eriksen is as good or better than Hazard or De Bryne Id have to disagree. I think you'd struggle to find anyone outside of this forum who would say that....
More assists, more goals, more distance covered, never injured +++ What more could he do? If Eriksen played for Cheatski or City, he'd be a much better player (in everyone else's eyes). But since he only plays for Tottenham, he can't be nearly as good as De Breune or Hazard. That said, they are totally different players. Eriksen is more like Silva. And he's outperformed him too....

Pulisic over Bale. Every goddamn day. And I say this as someone who *loves* what Bale did for us, and dearly wishes that the impossible happens and he comes home one day.

But Pulisic represents what we want to be. Bale represents what we were, and what we one day may be if we grow enough to make affording him a possibility.

But right now, we're in between. And Pulisic represents that. Perfectly.

I haven’t got the time to reply to your post as I like, but I still disagree with some of that. Out of curiosity why do you think we keep falling short of winning a trophy then? Can’t keep using youth as an excuse as we have Lloris, Vertonghen, Toby,Dembele, Rose, Eriksen is very experienced etc So what is it?

You make it sound as though we have a GHod given right to be winning trophies - there are at least five other clubs in the league that will have something to say about that - there's only so many to go around after all

Not at all - all I was saying was that Bale could get us to achieve our objective of winning trophies....that’s the idea isn’t it? We keep saying how we’re as good as the Chelsea’s, Man Us, Arsenal’s of this world yet we don’t do what they do and win trophies do we? Even Arsenal during their slump managed to win the FA cup twice. If we want to talk like we’re one of the big boys we have to back it up with silverware at some point....

Of course that is the aim...

Personally i think first XI wise we are as good as each of Chelsea Man Utd and Arsenal regardless of the trophies they have picked up in the last couple of seasons and that we dont need a big Bale type signing to close the gap on them as the gap is already non-extistant - this team is good enough to win things and given time im sure it will

I agree theres hardly anything between us and them, which i why a genuine match winning marquee signing would help IMO. Been hearing this for a while now about give it time, but how much time have we got before players want to leave due to lack of trophies? And whilst Im confident even if that happens we will suitably replace for the most part, they will too need time to bed in and we will need again to give the whole team time to really get going with the new recruits - and so the cycle begins again....

There is a myriad of reasons, not least competition, timing and luck, injuries, experience... Put it this way, had we Bale last season, there is still no guarantee we would have won the league.

We already have match winners. We have leaders. We have top class players. Gone is the Tottenham that needed a star player to get a result. In fact, quite the opposite now.

Of course, I do appreciate the value of a stand out player, look what Suarez did for Liverpool - BUT it has to be the right one. And again, Suarez is a good example. Ironically a player we were looking at, quality and potential unrealised, bought before the big boys took him seriously and then hey presto! Star man is found. At Pool he fit in perfectly, in the right way, and played his part.

If we can find that player, Im all for it. For me though Bale most certainly doesnt represent "that" player.

Well of course it would help i just dont think its particularly realistic to expect a signing on the level of established players like Hazard De Bruyne and Sanchez to happen - its kind of pie in the sky dreaming i think tbqh

Bale with the link already there is an interesting one and i certainly wouldn't be against pushing the boat out on wages if we could get him at a reasonable fee but in reality im sure one of the games richest clubs would come in for him and blow us out the water.

The Bale thing entirely relies on the idea that he'd favour us over more money elsewhere because of the previous link - were that not there he wouldn't even be considered a realistic target.

Outside of Bale who would you consider the type of markee signing to step is up to the next level?

Ok so it’s as much a case of you thinking Bale isn’t that special player as anything. That’s fine, I can see the arguments against signing him I just personally still think he’d be an amazing acquisition but can accept many want to leave that in the past. Is there anyone you think is attainable that could be our Suarez?

A new stadium sponsor might fund the wages of a superstar signing. I wouldn't be against one if they were right but wouldn't mind someone with experience of winning a trophy that isn't necessarily a superstar either. I mean someone like Khedira went on a free transfer. VDV wasn't a superstar but had won things etc.
