Harry Winks

Indeed. Barkley is Alli's cover in the setup
I would have guessed he might be Eriksen's cover in a Spurs setup. England I don't know.

He is not a CM IMO, or at least not yet. He doesn't have the discipline to do that job at the level we would require. Maybe if Poch had him for a while things might change but for CM, even now, I would pick Winks over him.

I think more Alli than Eriksen. Barkley is powerful, but doesn't have much of a brain on him in terms of being a playmaker. I think Lamela is/will be Eriksen's cover as playmaker.

I wouldn't swap Winks for any other young ballplaying CM in Europe right now - I think he could reach Modric/Iniesta level in time.

That may be, but he's significantly better on the ball than any non-Spurs, English, centre mids I can think of.

Faint praise?

Look, agree re Winks potential, but at this stage its just that. So many English players have looked the part at the almost stage, and never pushed on, or more often regressed.

He's got the right coach, he's got amazing players to learn from and a team that can give him experience at highest level, all up to him now.

Was only a matter of time. Congrats to Winks.

So happy he's fit and firing again. Been missed.

Been missed due to his influence or the feeling of an academy player waiting to rip it up?

Been above average for his experience. Looking forward in seeing him in the pitch.

I love him, I think he is great.

And I heartily subscribe to the Modric comparisons.

Much of my excitement is based on just how good it looks like he can be, rather than is, which I hold my hands up to.

That said, I think he has already proven we (as a top tier club) can rely upon him in the premier league, which is a huge compliment in itself - even if it can be argued he hasnt blown people away with incredible performances (or whatever).

He's not the type of player to do that. Just like Modric and Carrick before him, he'll just quietly make 100+ passes and run the game, while barely making the MOTD highlights

Every time I've seen Winks play, he's looked busy. Always wanting the ball, looking for the quick pass, recycling possession. I like it a lot.

The only shame is that he's not taken 40 as a squad number. Opportunity missed.

My thoughts as well, i see a little bit of how SP was he first broke into the team. Over the years i have accepted that getting over excited about young players breaking in the team and carry on forward is dangerous as so many fail to push on. However there is a lot to like about Winks game and he seems level headed to accept that he still has a lot of work to do and is willing to do it.

His influence primarily.

I really think it's quite likely that we didn't sign a central playmaker type last summer because Pochettino rated Winks highly. And even from his first couple of games his quality was there to be seen. I think he adds something very different to our central midfield than Dier, Wanyama and Dembele. When he hasn't been available that's been missed, more so in some games than in others of course.

He pretty much ran the midfield against APOEL in a difficult and vital game for us. Even though other players added the decisive touches to the ball in that game I do feel he was important in the win and our chances of winning without him would have been reduced.

Can't wait to see more of him this season.

Way too early to get really excited. We have been here with a host of midfielders and none have progressed and made it.

He would need to continue with what he has done and add a fair bit for me to think he is the genuine article.

Unfortunately it takes very little to get a call-up for England these days.

And what do you make of Harry Kane's chances? Will he be back at Leyton Orient come the start of next season?
