Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

No one has improved, bar City with Bernardo Silva and Walker.

It's just expensive churn of mediocre players.

Poch is the exact opposite to a chequebook manager. If anything I imagine he's delighted at having a full pre-season with a settled squad and no international tournament interference.
That's not quite true. As things stand Arsenal have improved (although I accept that this would no longer be the case if Sanchez leaves) and Man Utd have also improved.

We can only have 25 players. If we can't find a 6th AM better than GKN/Edwards/Sissoko, who will accept our wages and being 6th AM, then so be it. A good 70% of signings flop anyway.

We have the youngest squad in Europe and they will improve through organic growth. Onomah, Edwards and KWP should be playing more of a role this year.

Injuries happen, but we've got a very versatile squad and haven't really been short at any point over the last two seasons.
Not strictly true.... We can only have 25 players over the age of 21. You can then supplement the squad with as many under 21s as you want. I'm not sure I advocate having a full squad of 25 over 21 players and then a bunch of under 21s on top of that. However I think it is sensible to have a squad of 22 players considered to be 'first team' players with 4 or 5 talented players from the academy on top of that.

If we look at the current squad we have:

A fantastic first team. As good as any team in the league:
1. LLoris
2. Trippier
3. Rose
4. Alderweireld
5. Vergonghen
6. Wanyama
7. Son
8. Dembele
9. Kane
10. Ali
11. Eriksen

Some very capable subs that we are generally pretty happy to see starting in the event of rotating/resting the first 11.
12. Vorm
13. Dier
14. Davies
15. Winks
16. Lamela

A set of reserve players who the jury is out on in terms of whether they are good enough:
15. Wimmer
18. Janssen
19. Sissoko
20. NKoudou

And then we are down to the young players breaking through from the youth set-up. None of which have yet shown that they are good enough for first team football at Spurs (although I would be surprised if at least one of the three doesn't end up making it at the top level):
21. Onomah
22. Walker-Peters
23. Carter Vickers

From looking at the above I would say that we are currently 2 or 3 proper first team squad players short of having a squad that can challenge on multiple fronts. However that will become 3 or 4 if Sissoko goes and 4 or 5 if Wimmer also goes.... I think Henrichs from Leverkusen and Barkley from Everton would instantly make us stronger. I also wouldn't mind us having a little go at get getting Lanzini from West Ham as I think he is having a bit of a contract stand off at the moment.

Agree with your post Finley although I don't think Trippier is at the level of Walker. He is a good option as a squad player but as our main right back I am not convinced, whereas Imho Walker was one of if not the best right back in the PL.

Good shout on Lanzini though I doubt WHU will sell to us on principle.

True.... but if we we bid for him then I'm sure he would be desperate to join us... we're a bigger club, in the CL, excellent manager who is his countryman and he wouldn't even have to leave London. I wonder if £35 million would do it?

Agreed... It is why Henrichs is a player I would love to bring in.

£35M!!!!

Scary money but he is a very good player and one tha could thrive at a decent side

Only concern is his poor goal return

€35m seems a lot, or it used to be all of one season ago. Actually I don't know how players are valued any more in this crazy market, but he will our record signing at that price and for someone who will be understudy to Eriksen more than likely. Still though I think he would be worth a shot. It also would have the added bonus of annoying the brick out of West Ham fans. That on it's own is worth a few mil ;)

No thanks 35mil for lanzini but i wouldn't mind bidding for him and then cancelling the deal at the last minute.

Good summary of our squad, thanks for that. Though the number of signings needed depends a lot on how Pochettino rates those players you classify as either "jury out" or "young players".

That's the unknowable for us fans and for me why complaining about what's going on in the transfer market makes little sense. Particularly with Pochettino's record with us and Southampton.

Poch, quoted on ESPN:

"We are working, trying to add some players to the squad," Spurs' manager added. "But that [injury] does not change our idea. Our idea was to try to provide the team with more strength and try to sign a few players before the end of the transfer window.

"But it's true that now we are in the last few weeks of the transfer window and if we want to strengthen the team and the squad. Be sure that we need to sign a few players. We are looking at different positions in the team and trying to bring the right profile of player. But we are looking to add in different positions of the pitch, different players."

'a few' - I like!! We need a CB, AM and forward (as well as a RB)

"For sure we're going to spend," he told talkSPORT. "We're going to strengthen our squad and sign some players who can help us fight. We need new energy in the team.

"We have a very confident team who are ready to challenge again for a big season, but it's true we have the responsibility to try to provide some new energy every season.

"I'm sure that will happen and we'll add some players before the end of the transfer window. We are working hard to deliver that and ensure that by the end we add a few players, maybe three or four. We'll see. We are so close to making it happen.

"The transfer market is a little bit more relaxed now. The other big sides have spent almost all their money and now it's our moment. It's Tottenham's time to get involved.

"The type of player we want to add is very specific and it has been difficult to make it happen early on in the transfer window, but we are so calm."

I agree with this, also the question people can not answer despite going into overdrive is who do you buy and replace that is going to improve us and keep people happy? Alli, Eriksen and Son, who is going to replace them? Kane? Verts and Toby? Dembele and Wanyama? Do you buy someone for the sake of it to quench the thirst of the press and pockets of fans and demote someone to the bench or bring someone in to just sit on the bench?

As Poch said today we need people that will improve us and being sensible who is out there to bring more to our first 11?

Where people are getting carried away is because the lesser clubs are spending big but look at who they are spending on? Its over inflated prices for players leaving one mid table shower of shizzle to go to another etc.

Three or four sounds about right for the squad as it stands.

I like it... but it does sound rather like a Trump Tweet!

I wouldn't have said that many mate. I would say a quality young right back, and a playmaker/ game changing player (could be a striker or midfielder). Thought we might have gone in for iheanacho in that respect. Who were you thinking out of interest?
