Pre Season 2016

Things I learned from this tour:

Firstly, I actually like the new home kit and the gold away kit. Secondly, we finished with 9 proper homegrown players on the field against Atletico, we should be damn proud of that.

So far as the football goes, we probably looked our most dangerous when having the #10 breaking past the #9 and the times when Mason drifted forward past the pair. The front four never truly clicked into gear over the course of the two games, however we were up against two very good teams, whilst fielding experimental lineups. Lamela in behind Janssen/Harrison did work well, but I was more encouraged by how he wanted to also get past the striker and bear down on goal. Something that I haven't seen him do enough of. Edwards and Onomah looked better fits in the wide roles than Chadli and Carroll, whilst Son showed flashes of ability. I liked that Janssen is as aggressive at pressing as Kane and has the physical presence to hold up the ball, something we have lacked when without Kane.

Further back, it's fair to say that Wanyama has taken to this system as expected and we are much the stronger for his inclusion. Winks could probably step in ahead of Carroll and Mason in the next 6 months, he will only improve with game time. It's harsh, as Mason was good against Atletico.

It's probably not fair to make judgements on the defence, but I will say that I was suprised by the improvement in Yedlin, whilst disappointed with Trippier's two performances. CCV looks the pick of the three lads that played at CB, Walkes was quite assured back there, whilst Ball didn't really impress at CB or at DM.

Lol i actually liked last seasons kit more after watching pre season.

Agree with your review on wanyama and others, and yes its especially harsh to draw any conclusions at all given the proportion of new and/or young players against pretty good opposition.

Its interesting to see how poch lines up for these games, but theres a sense that he is still learning about the next best eleven. I believe he knows that has his first eleven sorted - pending any late departures- and therefore has time on his side.

Nevertheless i hope we get off to a better start compared to last year.

we learnt nothing from these matches, don't kid yourself that you did and that was atletico's first pre season game, they're behind us in terms of conditioning so that takes some gloss off the result if there was any to be on there.
Pre -season is like getting married, you know what they say - terrible wedding, great, long term marriage and vice versa, hope we lose in Norway and then Poch will have us fighting to start the season with a bang

So out of that ..

- Not surprised at all by CCV, I've seen him play for USA under-whatevers, he is a year or two from pushing hard for a 1st team spot.
- Carroll and Mason have had chances, personal opinion, Carroll is too safe a player, doesn't go for it in a way his ability suggests he can. Mason has been unlucky with injuries (partly to do with his committed style), good squad option, but has been too much the utility player and hence will struggle against players that own a spot.
- Looks like Wanyama and Lamela will start the season in form, that could be crucial to us getting a good start.
- Yedlin is interesting (late developer due to US system, they go to university instead of moving directly to pro ranks), not a great player, but his pace could be interesting if Poch can figure it out in the system. Additionally he does deserve some credit for the improvement since he came to England (especially positionally & defensively)

Do they think Norwegians are a little simple? Could have had something a bit more dynamic...Join us...Excited to visit... :)

All very good points, well made

So we could actually see a half with -> Lloris, Rose, Toby, Wimmer, Walker, Dier, Dembele, Eriksen, Lamela, Alli, Kane (assumed 1st 11 till Jan returns)

Would like to see Kane & Janssen on field at same time, also see Edwards/Winks used with most of the main squad on, see the impact they could have.

Wanyama must have a knock or something personal? (my assumption is he covers for Dembele in opener, so odd to not have him in this one)

Dembel not 1st team for a few weeks, is Alli clear of suspension now?

Alli is, Dembele out for another 4. As above, Wanyama must have a knock. I'm expecting Poch to play things safe away against Everton and play Wanyama alongside Dier

It's safe as in him being the closest we have to Dembele in the squad. If Mason starts I'll be worried.
