Ryan Mason

I think that it is just because Poch does not place a lot of importance on who is captain

I think Poch knows the psychology of his squad and that some of them - Kane, Rose, Mason - will feel great wearing the armband and leading the team out.

I think that more often that not he just gives it to the most senior player

So with Mason it was the 'not', rather than the 'more often' as Alderweireld is more senior to Mason in every regard - age, appearances, international caps AND tattoos.

By length of time with the club do you mean as a first team squad member or affiliation with the club going back to the academy?

Well let's have a look at the players he has made captain over the last couple of years:

Lloris
Kane
Rose
Walker
Mason
Lennon
Kaboul
Adebayor

Who have I missed?

I'm not saying that it wouldn't. I am just saying that I think that Poch thinks that the captaincy is not particularly important.

Overall captaincy for the season probably matters a bit more. For one EL game I don't think it matters all that much.

I wouldn't expect Alderweireld to act any differently on the pitch with or without the armband in a game like that. And off the pitch he'll know he's not the team captain anyway.

Nice to see Mason get the armband I thought. Well deserved for a player that has worked hard for a long time and keeps working hard for the club.

Completely lost out there tonight. For long periods I forgot he was even playing.
He did struggle. I think in the first half a lot of our boys did but we needed someone in that first half to grab the game by the scruff and keep a cool head. As poch said be brave in possession

But mason wasn't in isolation in not taking charge

From what little I've seen none of our players turned up and did their job
