Serious relegation fears

For once at least, goal difference will work in our favour. I have to say, I'm worried and irritated by the way UTD are fluking their way through the league. They are playing aweful football yet somehow keep coming away with positive results.

Considering that a draw would be enough for us to stay ahead of them on goal difference regardless of their result (within reason) I would say that the most likely outcome is that we stay ahead of them if it's either that or them leapfrogging us.

Looking on oddschecker the odds are somewhat better for them, though not by much. Can go a lot of ways, but I would be disappointed if we lose to Palace.

Couldn't agree more. I actually think Southampton at Utd will be quite a tough game for them and wouldn't be surprised to see both games ending in draws. Palace are struggling for goals at the moment but will definitely come at us being that they are at home which could well work in our favour. I think we play better against a team like Palace and have more scope for not being caught out away from home than we do at home tbh.

Nice to see Chelsea take on Arsenal where they have a great record even if they aren't in very good form. A draw in that game and a possible win for us leaves us in a very good position. Leicester at home to Stoke is a tough one as well and could go any of the three ways and hopefully Emirates Marketing Project will beat West ham and create a bit of daylight between them and Arsenal. All in all, everything to play for and as long as we are in a good position like we are now by the turn of Feb to March then it really is ours for the taking in terms of top 3.

Watching MotD2 Jonathan Pearce said something like "if Utd don't win today that will be 1 win in 9 for Utd and could hasten Van Gaal's exit..."

Was that right? Surely they can't have crept up on us with form like that???!!! OK I checked bbc it says

W Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
D Saudi Sportswashing Machine 3-3 Man Utd
W Man Utd 2-1 Swansea
D Man Utd 0-0 Chelsea
L Stoke 2-0 Man Utd
L Man Utd 1-2 Norwich
L Bournemouth 2-1 Man Utd
D Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
D Leicester 1-1 Man Utd

That is shocking form, how are they up our jacksies?! We must be rubbish.

It's more to do with them dropping down whilst we caught them up. In the last 6 games we have won 4, lost 1 and drawn 1, 13 points from a possible 18 whilst UTD have only made 8 from the same number of games. The loss to Leicester just allowed them to catch up a little.

Might have not been a bad thing that United did win in the end then...every cloud and all that.

2 wins in 9 and now they are talking about the title...

Best form in the league over the last 6 games. If everyone maintains their current form, we'll win it by a point from the Arse :)

I think this season, predicting the future is futile. Everyone is inconsistent. Until the last ten games which I see as the last lap of a 1500m race, at which point its game on.

I still think City will pip Arse to the title and ourselves, Utd and Leicester battle out the remaining two spots.

This, more than anything else, is what fills me with confidence.

For the first time ever in my life we are consistent.

I would argue that we have been the most consistent team in the league. And while we are obviously reliant on a few players, we seem to finally have a proper squad that can somewhat mitigate injuries/dips in form.

Hopefully we actually sign Berahino this month. Although I feel like even if we do, he will take at least until next season to settle in, and as such if Kane snaps his leg we are royally fudged.

Forget about CL, funny thing is we are still in the title race, like it or not ! We did our best to drop out of the league title race by losing to Leicester. But the ever generous Arsenal and the very grateful Leicester have done their part to keep us in it ! Hope we make use of the chance well.
Fingers crossed that Poch does a much better job in managing the latter part of this season than Harry did 4 years ago!

How on earth did we finish below Arsenal that season?

The reason was Redknapp ! When you have players like King, Modric, Bale, Lennon, VDV, Sandro and in-form Adebayor in the team, it is totally unacceptable not to qualify to CL atleast, especially after leading Arsenal by 10 points and still end up behind them ! I think more experienced managers like Wenger, Mourinho or even AVB would have done wonders with that team !

Interesting to blame the manager for the failure to manage such good players to a 3rd place finish.... Surely if doing this then you have to also give credit to the same manager for assembling such a good team?

Also it seems a bit strange to include Adebayor in your list of good players and then state that you felt AVB could've done wonders with it... We all saw exactly what happened when AVB got to manage Adebayor (but of course you wouldn't want to give Redknapp any credit for actually getting Adebayor playing would you). Wasn't it also AVB who bombed VDV out of the club?

I'd happily give him credit for assembling a great team if he was accountable for buying most of them

Whatever way you look at it, it was a massive failure in leadership. Too many games in the second half of the season where we didn't turn up and players had off days. At times I blamed Redknapp because we didn't look to have a plan B against the teams that sat back, now I think it more down to not having the right mentality instilled in the players on the field. Some of them didn't seem all too fussed about dropping those points against the lower teams, because we had set out sights on nothing grander than the top four. Had we had a mindset of winning as many games as possible, we may have kept pace with the top two. It all changed when we lost at Emirates Marketing Project and we stopped trying to keep up with the top two.

Never rated Adebayor but he was at his best while still on loan in his first year under Redknapp but became shyte once he signed permanently just when AVB was taking over. Maybe he would have been decent if he was still on loan then. As for VDV, it was reported that he wanted to leave Spurs to be with his wife in Germany. It is a fact that Redknapp assembled a good team but failed to get the best out of them.

Perhaps it was that simple. Or perhaps it was just that Adebayor wanted to play for Redknapp due to the way that he treated him. Remember that Adebayor also played very well for Sherwood (who treated Adebayor in a similar way to Redknapp - i.e. simply telling him that he is brilliant and to go out there and show it). I'm not sure that I would want to give my all for a manager who wanted to demean me by making me stand on a chair and apologise for something like AVB did with Adebayor.

Re: VDV. I think his own version of it was that that the manager made no effort to keep him and was more than happy to let him go. Again, I think he was one of those players that needed an arm around him. A good manager realises which players need an arm around them and which need a kick up the arse to get the best out of them.

I also think that Harry's handling of King is ignored when in fact it was a very brave thing to do. There aren't too many managers out there who would be prepared to let a player miss training all week and then turn up on Friday and decide whether or not they felt OK to play that weekend. For example could you imagine a manager like AVB allowing this?... He was the sort of manager that thought it was all about his coaching and organisation as opposed to realising that three quarters of the battle is having the best players on the pitch.

People think that the team Harry ended up with at Spurs (that should've finished 3rd at worst) was the team that Harry started with, but they were poles apart. Harry brought characters back to our dressing room, he strengthened our resolve and our spine, he brought in Walker, VDV and Sandro, he got the best out of Adebayor, he turned Ekotto from a failure into one of the best left backs in the league. Under his stewardship Modric and Bale changed from little boys lost to World class players, he got Lennon playing consistently, he got King on the pitch for most of our important games, he even managed to turn Gomes from a quivering, cry baby wreck of a keeper into one of the best goalkeepers in the league. Most of all though he made us the best team to watch in the league by a country mile. I can remember at away games in the pub before/after the game how often the fans of the other team would say how they loved watching us play and how they hoped that we would be the team to win the league. Sure he should've got us a 3rd place finish that season, but he was also the manager that put together the team that should've finished 3rd.

Perhaps it is a similar scenario this season with Pochettino?.... I wonder how many on here will criticise him about failing should he also end up missing out on a 3rd place finish? I hope that he gets us there so we don't have to find out!
