*** OMT Spurs v Aston Villa ***

This is not really the time to decide on prioritites between the league and cups. We could easily prioritize the cups now and get knocked out in the first round of the EL knockout stage if we get a tough draw. We could equally go on a poor run and be out of the CL place competition by February.

We have to do a bit of everything and see what pans out come January/February. Then we can think about making priorities. At least we won't have quite as packed a fixture list as last season.

Couldn't have put it better myself. We are out of the League Cup, so only three tournaments to consider. Why do we need to choose to prioritise at this stage? We should be going all out in all of them and see what happens and then, if necessary, start to prioritise ( if that is still an option!) early next year.

Sure, it's impressive that he manages to perform so well at his age, but at the end of the day the first team is about instant results, so Poch needs to select on who he thinks will perform the best, regardless of age. If that's Alli in his mind: fine. Considering how Mason played thus far though, it's got to be him for me atm.

Don't get me wrong, I think Alli has done well, just disagree with this reluctance to change a winning team mentality. Those who performed the least in our team should not be guaranteed to start again the next match just because we won.

You make it sound like winning is easy! Comments like, "just because we won" do not take into account that it was our first win in five. To change a team that won 5-1 away from home in the PL would not be the best for the team and any attempt to build momentum.

The only possible reason for changing would be to take into account the upcoming games with Anderlecht and the Goons. And exactly who has forgotten Mason's good form prior to his injury ? Poch has almost always given players time before bringing them back after injury ( or starting new signings). Mason is a great option off the bench at the moment. So is Nige, who's speed is best utilised against tiring players not against a team parking the bus from the off.

Of course winning isn't easy, but to ignore individual performances just because we got the three points sounds like madness to me.

Resources will kick in, and we'll finish either par (6th) or 1 under (5th), whatever we do. That won't change till we get new stadium revenue.

Last year we actually managed fifth though, with a worse team. Now Chelsea is in such a mess I don't see why we can't get fourth.

What our young team needs is a taste of glory to spur them on. A bit like United winning the cup in 90 was the start of their domination

I don't disagree with this, but with the way we play in Europe I don't really see us winning the EL anytime soon. Even when we do put out a strong team we usually put in mediocre performances.

To be fair that is not the only reason why Poch might change the team. He should pick the best team that he thinks he has available, even if that means players who have been performing well miss out. He also needs to consider the fitness of individual players and whether one player might be better at exploiting a weakness or providing greater solidity than another.

Sorry GB but this is a loser mentality - finances put us at a disadvantage, obviously, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be trying to finish above the teams with more than us - money buys you players it doesn't buy you points and as we know from recent seasons it's very much possible for us to finish above anyone if we are on form.

I certainly hope our players don't have the attitude that we can't do better than the sum of our parts

The dimwit's revenge...

I fear this is the one game that dumb brick will be desperate to win, he'll have his lads geed up and running about, we need to be careful.

3-2 to us, Lamela, Kane and N'Jie

Now unless i am having some serious mental issues or living in some alternate reality, didnt he get sacked?

Unless their interim manager Kevin MacDonald is a dimwit who happens to look like Sherwood? If so i wouldnt want to be him.

I do like the idea of going for the cups and I hope we do but at the same time top 4 is also wide open. We cannot afford to turn down these opportunities to grab the cash that the champs leagu brings in.

I have always thought that both winning a trophy and finishing in the top 4 are equally important. Although I do accept achieving the latter is financially more rewarding. It's just that I am old fashioned and still love the glory.

Qualifying for CL is not only about financial rewards but also about employee happiness. We are certain to lose our top players - Eriksen, Lloris, and eventually Keane - if we don't regularly qualify for the CL. Look at Arsenal, they don't have to fret every summer about retaining their top players despite not having won anything important in a while.

Is everyone in this thread high? (poster above worried about TS)

Arsenal continuously lose their best players (City, United, Chealsea, Barca, everyone picks off their players), press rumors are currently on about Sanchez ..

For me the loser mentality is aiming to 'win 4th' when we are competing against 5 teams trying to win 1st. With this likely to be the last season with 4 CL places (falling to 3 the season afterwards), it's even more a futile thing to chase. A totally hollow crown

Cups are glory. An end in themselves. And instil a mentality and a hunger than could launch us into a title challenge.

We didn't make any money being in the CL. We just haemorrhaged it all in all in wage bonuses.

Only the stadium will bring sustainable growth.

We also have a slight advantage in a settled squad, over Liverpool (new players/coach) and Chelsea (general disarray or new coach/new players).
If we had to get past one of West Ham/Leicester/Southampton/Palace I'd be confident, but could one of them stay the distance?

@Gutter Boy My 'aim' is to do as best as possible, not 'win 4th' as you put it

And that's in all comps so there's no need to preach about winning trophies as I am already of that thinking - however I'm not the type to wave a white flag because other teams have more money than us

I understand.

It just seems to me that all of our last 4 managers have unnecessarily neglected the cups, as in the end we always finish 5th or 6th (depending how crisis-y Liverpool are). We aren't close to the Sky 4, and we are well above the rest. We're really just in a mini-league with Liverpool, which matters little unless there's 2 EL places go to the cups and only 1 for 5th.

I'm a huge Poch fan, but the three things he's done that disappoint me the most was not playing strong enough teams against Leicester in the FA (Kane and Eriksen rested), Fiorentina away in EL (Kane, Mason and Walker rested) and Arsenal in the LC (Vorm!!!). I genuinely think we would have been in with a chance of winning 2-3 pieces of silverware.
