Redknapp wanted to sign Hazard, Vertonghen was basically a done deal, Remy was a target for years but we never pulled the trigger and he also wanted Cahill. I can take the point that he went mainly for experience, but the results on the pitch backed up his signings. We also signed Palacios, Walker, Naughton and Pienaar, a good mix of potential and experience.

I have no doubt we would have continued to sign young players as well as players in their prime.

Commoli (or whoever at the club) wanted to sign Bale, Modric and Berbatov - and being a DoF whose job it is to work on transfer activity he could afford the time to go out and get these players to want to sign for us ahead of the other clubs interested. It's all well and good saying Redknapp wanted XY and Z but the fact is we never got them in - maybe having someone at the club who could prioritize such things would have seen a few of those wishlist names on the actual signed list...

Who knows. Maybe he would have signed players the manager did not want or ask for. Okay that was a throwaway comment, but every Spurs manager has had to deal with not getting every player they wanted, my point was that Redknapp didn't only sign or want to only sign old geezers on high wages.

I really find it baffling how people can criticise his approach (not just aimed at you) but praise what we have now when we have clearly gone backwards. The likes of GB continually claim that we relied too much on individual brilliance to win football matches, but this was the case even more so when the next manager came in.

Was there ever a player Redknapp didnt fancy though?
In his final 6 months we were getting by with Nelson and Saha remember.

Did you read the entirity of my original post?

As i said - we need to look at what bought about the success we enjoyed during the Redknapp era. And IMV the two key factors were:

Signing young players with WC potential or players with WC potential not widely known.
Backing the manager with regards to first team transfers.

We acheived the best results for buying young players with a DoF - im sure we can all agree on that?
And although it may well have turned sour in the window where he looked like he was about to jump ship for England i think overall he got the players he wanted or at least for the most part more than any other manager/head coach here.

So the key for me is to make sure we cover both these factors going forward. I believe the chances of us doing that with a DoF in place is much higher than our chances without. But without backing the Head Coach in first team transfer it is doomed to fail (see AVB)

For all we know though, all those foreign players could have been suggested to him and he was the one that originally came up with Saha and Nelsen.

Erm, yes 8-[

I can agree in part, some good players were signed BEFORE Redknapp, I don't deny. But for all of your claims that the decline was caused partly by him not buying enough young players with potential, the DoF also left us with an unbalanaced squad with no proper defensive midfielder, Redknapp immediately identified we had a soft underbelly and signed Palacios so for all it's merits, it left us with problems.

I don't think Redknapp gets credit for some of the simple things he did, like that mug Ramos playing Ledley King in the Europa League rendering him unable to play the league games, this whilst we were bottom of the league! It beggars belief that Redknapp had to even fix that in the first place.

Personally, I think it's bit unfair to suggest we started going downhill because we didn't sign enough young players. We will never know how we would have fared had Redknapp stayed, but I can't possibly imagine we would be worse than we are now.

If Redknapp hadn't balls-up CL, we would probably had gotten Hazard (remember on TV he actually said he was interested in joining us; we were 3rd and trendy then, it was Feb 2012, you know the rest).
Cahill we tried for but HE rejected US because he knew he could wait a little longer for a pay day. Levy can't be blamed or not getting either of these.
Remy? Until recently who else on our level were in for him anyway?

Redknapp's misuse of the squad (not rotating and using the likes of Pienaar and Kranjcar properly) was ultimately his downfall in the end one of the likely reasons why he wasn't backed fully

Well if you had read my original post and my subsequent ones you should have noticed that i haven't said the DoF was faultless or that we should repeat the mistakes made. I have outlined what i think led to the 'success' we had under Redknapp and that we should be looking to repeat what we got right. And what we got right fell under both structures.

Commoli: Funny how he talks about our lack of staff but he doesn't mention why when we needed a DM we bought Zokora; or wen we needed an experience squad defender he got a rookie in Kaboul.

Oh did Liverpool lack in staff as well, and hence he blew a load of money on Downing, Adam, Carroll etc?

That guy is a joker!

That's not really the point. The fact is, we were interested in signing Hazard but it doesn't fit the narrative of only wanting to sign old codgers like Joe Cole.

Gary Cahill - Who said I was blaming Levy? If a bigger club come in for him then there's not much we can do about it. Just mentioned that Redknapp wanted to sign him, relax.

Krancjar should have got more game time agreed but where would you have played him?

Pienaar - He just didn't work out. I actually felt it was an unnecessary signing to be honest but he can't be accused of signing another typical Redknapp old player with no sell on value player in that case.

I actually think Levy's and Redknapp's methods complimented each other, in the transfer window btw, don't go off on one cos I know fully well they didn't see eye to eye in other matters :p

Remy - Don't see what your point is. So other top clubs weren't in for him so we shouldn't be? Please correct me If I am wrong. How many big clubs were in for Nasri, Anelka, Ronaldo, Berbatov etc?

Why do you keep bringing up Pienaar Jurgen? He was 29/30 when we signed him on high wages with no sell on value :rio:
