I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

I must say there have not been very many English 19 year olds that have looked as good as he has over the past 12 months for both club and country. He already looks the most important player in the England team. He needs to spend more time in the number 10 role as opposed to on the wing

Sterling reminds of a young Lennon! Rodgers has done a superb job with him, and if the boy stays with the manger who's really brought him up, also through some tricky spells, then they will have to beat back Spanish giants. I can personally see him at Barca. As for Erik, let me just reconfirm that I believe he will have a breakthrough season and that next season we will see the tangible signs of a world superstar. He has it all. Now he just needs time...
 
good article here on lamela and how poch intends to use him; credit to rodgers to resorting to fouls in midfield as highligheted in the article. one i can remember is allen grabbing him with all limbs when he'd gone through.

To be fair to him, he didn’t hide, he kept trying to make something happen. With 84 touches, he was second only to Ettiene Capoue in terms of involvement in the match. It just wasn’t his day, but why?

They particularly targeted Lamela, especially when we had an opportunity to break. The second he got clear in midfield an opposition player was on him, slowing him down and putting him off his stride. Often this would involve subtle, niggly fouls; small pushes and pulls checking his runs, putting him off balance. It was a clever tactic and many times the referee let these go.
Lamela was still the most fouled player on the pitch

pretty sure thats the golden rule to do to all players that havent yet adapted to the pace of the league. Get tight and put them off their game

look at costa vs Everton, they were all over him fouling him all over the shop

What rodgers did IMO shouldnt be given any credit...you'll find that sort of thing in most teams. Even united favoured that tactic whenever they lost the ball........the referees were really under SAF thumbs, how many transition attacks from opposition were stopped due to stupid fouls by united players and the ref let them go uncarded

Spurs have won 58% of the tackles they have attempted this season, a higher percentage than any other PL club.

the one time i have nothing but superlatives for the kid , i have to find his thread on page TWO??!!!

The kids did great today......why isnt anyone running naked in the streets about him dealing with the physicality no problem and riding challenges and pressing opponents like he was a world class player (which he ISNT by the way. At least not now)

His technique is also crazy by the way...i always thought he was technical but he had that consistently it 'seemed' today in all sorts of situations

Thought he was a bit inconsistent against Sunderland, particularly in the first half things didn't seem to quite work out for him. Although he looked like the attacking player most likely to make something happen.

Great news is that he keeps trying and like you say keeps pressing. Looks confident beyond what he's actually produced in terms of assists and goals, he just knows (like you and me) that he's ****ing class and it will show in time.

Utterly unsurprised that he's dealing with the physicality.
 
What's impressed me is that he is a real Poch player in that he appears like he has the engine and stamina of a dynamo bunny. A few looked off their feet by the end of the Sunderland game, but he looked like he'd just kicked off, despite playing for Argentina.

I also like the fact his head doesn't drop when something comes off. Sign of a good player. Different player but he reminds me of Bale in that respect in that even in the early 'rough around the edges' years with Bale when it wasn't quite happening, he just looked like he had something about him. You just knew he'd turn into a beast and i've got that same feeling with lamela.

I though Bale drifted out of games a lot, particularly earlier in his career as a winger for us (discarding the full back part as it seems irrelevant). Mark him tightly, give him a kick up the ****, sit back and deny him space and he often produced very little from what I remember. To me that's quite different to the way Lamela is currently consistently looking for and asking for the ball and seemingly completely confident that he can make something happen the next time he gets the ball even when he's not been able to.

Very different to the Lamela we saw last season in that regard.

There was an article posted (in this thread I think) about how he was the fittest player at Roma. Surprised me too after last season, but so far his energy levels have been fantastic. Hopefully that's a sign of his true level, not just an Ade-esque boost from a new manager and getting games.

Yeah he's a different player to Bale (and in fact IMO his close control is superior, but Bale has blistering pace in counter to that, which Lamela does not have). My comparison is merely in that even when both weren't firing you could tell there was an exceptional player in there waiting to come out.

That I agree with!

I think Lamela's attitude right now is far superior to what Bale showed when he hadn't yet "come out". And that I hope that attitude is who he really is.
 
This player is showing me enough to suggest that he will have a strong season before really exploding next season; has an air of 'super-special' about him, is liquid on the ball and once he calibrates his decision making, we will have a game winner on our hands. TBF, he deserved to be that on Saturday - what a shot!

He was quieter this weekend but he was playing on the right as opposed to the centre. I know the three of them (Lamela, Chadli and Eriksen) rotate during the game, but it's no suprise that his quietest game for us so far came in a game where he was pushed wide. It's no coincidence that Eriksen happened to look closer to the player we worshipped last season with a return to a more familiar role.

Pace is key though in this league unless you have some amazing skill which so far he hasn't quite shown. Love his work rate and the fact he keeps on trying. He clearly looks like he is still on the upwards curve but it would be great to see him streaking past a few players in full stride to see how quick he actually is

I actually think he has the skill, what he's learning is how to use the skill in a much more physical environment.

Bale had the same issue, how to ride/avoid/escape challenges.

Lamela was hacked down a few times against Sunderland, the last tackle as I mentioned previously was clearly a ****ing red
