Christian Eriksen

Two good examples, particularly Falcao.

Maybe I'm just disillusioned with football in general. Not sure I can take seeing Eriksen sold to Madrid in two years time.

Even United had to give in and sell Ronaldo in the end...

I truly believe that if we do lose Eriksen two years from now the key to successfully dealing with that lies in the signings we make this summer and the summer after that. We can't rely on 7 new signings to replace a superstar and all adjust at once. We can't rely on finding the Carrick, Berbatov or Modric replacement in the same window as selling them. Players of the required quality and style most likely won't be available.

First we need a system to fit these players into. Then we have to get a "production line" type steady stream of new signings and youngsters coming in. Players that fit that system that are brought in not to immediately succeed and replace a predecessor, but players that can keep coming into the team and when one star leaves another couple of players are already settled, ready to step up and become the next stars. To take the Atletico example, their star this season hasn't been someone they signed to replace Falcao for tons of money, it's been Diego Costa that they signed some time ago that was given time to settle and develop. Of course the odd immediate impact massive signing is fantastic when it happens, but we can't rely on that as our standard operating procedure.

A tall order to do all this of course. Who can do it for us? I honestly think LvG might be able to...

No one bid anymore than 40 mill for Suarez cos Liverpool nipped in the bid from the off and said he was btk for sale under any circumstances.
Levy on the other hand opened negotiations with Madrid in May making it perfectly clear he was willing to sell if he could get the price he wanted.

But they didn't, Rodgers was practically pimping him out all summer until they realised no one was going over £40m for him. It's worked out great for them, congrats to them but let's not rewrite history. If Madrid had gotten tired of chasing Bale they could've easily had Suarez and for a fee far lower than £85m.

Ted Knutson (mixedknuts) on Twitter
Those of you who have been around a while know I was really big on the Christian Eriksen signing. Players with his stat production at his age are a rare and splendid thing, and unlike goalscoring, key passes and the like seem to translate well across leagues. In my opinion then Spurs paid a pittance for possibly the best young AM around. This perspective was... not widely shared at the time, but whatever. #bygones

Aaanyway, this will go in an article later this week, but you guys get a sneak peek. I am also a huge fan of David Silva. He and Ozil prob the best two creative passers in the Premier League and among the best in Europe period. Here is Silva's radar #MCFC pic.twitter.com/sZRtsCdf7Z

And here is Christian Eriksen, still just 22, overlaid on top of him. Expect more later this week, but wooooow. #thfc pic.twitter.com/m2HpCFQrt7

Coutinho vs Eriksen. V dif systems, but Pip a better dribbler and shooter. If conversion goes up, goals go WAY up pic.twitter.com/QZ5WUTdRNH

Thanks Steve - I like Ted's work. I suspect that if we ditched Ade for an in-form Soldado and went back to a posession game that through ball stat would jump too.

If that was the case why did Madrid go to such lengths to publicly unsettle the player/force Levy's hand?

Never? Atletico sold Falcao for £50m, they're benefiting. Roma sold Lamela and Marquinhos for £60m, they've benefited. It can be done.

He was never their player to sell! 3rd party owners parked him at Porto and then Atlético Madrid to drive his eventual price up.

The comparison to Silva is interesting, I really think Silva is a WC player, more so than the others in the list.

Eriksen in a settled side next season might be very interesting.

Who do people think he's most like? I initially thought like Modric (especially as we had him out left coming in), then like Modric with a shot, but he's a much more forward player than Modric, and Modric's better defensively (sits deeper).

The heir to vDVs throne in my opinion. So cool and calm when a goalscoring opportunity arises.

A replacement to Madrid would be more someone who doesn't really want to venture forward but will keep things ticking and provide superb distribution, clasie does fit the bill if LVG comes in.

I think you might have missed the point Rossi was making in response to the post he quoted and the conversation that preceded it.

Agreed. Heir to VdV and/or an upgrade on Sig.

Never seen Clasie play, but if he's as good as he's being touted to be on this forum by you and others we should sign him tomorrow.

I like this approach similar to what Ajax and Dortmund have been doing and by in large they have been able to bring through developing youth that are schooled correctly and ready to step up with minimal disruption. The only thing with implementing this approach to the club now is it will need a number of years before the conveyor belt allows this process to work and you need to really invest heavily in youth development and scouting as for every Mario Gotze plenty won't make the grade.

I feel with the new training facilities and the quality of the next gen team the foundations are already in place, someone like LvG could be just the right person to help steer the process to maximise these youngsters potential.

Quality player. The best of the Beatles.

Cool finish on Saturday, I know there are only 4 games to go, but he could yet end up being our leading goalscorer

Would we all have been happy if he came straight in for Vdv in that role when we had Modric and co?

---------------Sandro------Modric-------------
---Lennon--------Eriksen-----------Bale
-----------------------Adebayor-------------------

Think he has the attributes for sure and has been scoring

In May?? Behave. I'd like some evidence of 'negotiations'. At least those that extended beyond Levy repeatedly hanging up on the Madrid suits.

Perfectly clear he was willing to sell if we received an amount of money greater than anything ever paid for any player...
And people say we bent over.

That line up makes me want to cry .. **** we were so close ...

Put Lamela as bench option for Lennon, Soldado for Ade, side would probably walk top 4 ..

Eriksen is a player who again I think is actually quite shy and humble... He needs someone to tell him how good he could be!!

He started out at Ajax very similar up Modric but has spent the last 2 years playing number 10. He is without doubt the best player we have for that role and we only get 50% of his capability leaving him on the Left IMO (75% playing less 25% for his lack of defensive cover)

Play him with a ball playing centre mid who releases it quickly and he will get 15 plus goals and 15 plus assaults... Very much in the VDV stats although different styles of player

Are people forgetting Suarez had a min fee release clause? He would have verb goneski if a better club than Arsenal paid the £40m+1 and he decided to enforce it.
