Paulinho -José Paulo Bezerra Maciel Júnior

I wonder how AVB will compose the midfield three if he signs. Reading from that article it would seem that Sandro would lie behind him and Dembele, something like

Dembele - Paulinho

Sandro

That seems like the obvious choice if we move to a 4-3-3.

What would this signing mean for Holtby?

That he will have to fight hard for a place in the team, prove himself when given playing time and if he can show that he adds more to the team than some of the players that will most likely be first choice players ahead of him come the start of the season.

Seems about right imo.

This article says a lot about Paulinho being the link between the defence (Sandro) and attack (Sigurdsson/Holtby). IMO I can't see Paulinho excelling in a midfield with Dembele as they are too similar and there arent enough creative players in that midfield.

Hopefully we'll see :)

Not necessarily sure that this midfield 3 will be our first choice in every game even if we do sign Paulinho. If we do sign him we will have a lot of options, both for playing 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. Exactly what I think we need.

Quality options for both personnel and formations is a wonderful thing to have as well.

I get the feeling we are going to be incredibly hard to score against next season. Add some new quality up front to that and we really are in business.

Might also lead to an improvement in our pressing game, something that again could lead to more good turnovers. And we do have one or two players not half bad attacking on the break...

I think there's a ton of potential for improvement if we can complete this signing.

Options. Squad. 60 game season. Rotation. HUZZAH!

No, we must only have 11 quality players. Behind that we must have 11 similar, but lesser players. We can only have like-for-like replacements, otherwise it's all, like, tacital and stuff.

But... aren't we supposed to be signing a striker? WE CAN ONLY SIGN PLAYERS AFTER WE SIGN A STRIKER!

But we can't sign a striker until the Confed Cup is over, Levy has repaired his wheel barrow, POTL has cleared the paper jam in the fax machine, Jupiter rises in Venus and cassette tapes become hip again. And then we just need all the members on this site to agreement on one single target.

Something to consider is that Dembele might very well benefit from more rest/the chance to rehab his hip fully. I am absolutely convinced he played more than half the season in a greater degree of pain.

I've come round to this signing more, I wanted someone more creative but ultimately what's more creative than goals? If Paulinho can score very regularly he'll be worth it. Dembele and Sandro don't have that ability. Sig I think might but he can play off the left as well as centrally.

Seems AVB is building a team of powerhouses and I trust in his vision.

"As mentioned previously, Paulinho is a very typical box-to-box midfielder. As comes with the territory, he has a penchant for surging runs from deep and supporting the attackers ahead of him. However, that does mean he needs to be paired with a defensive midfielder to bring out his full potential."

That doesn't mean that he can't play alongside someone more attacking. I also think you're forgetting that Dembele is very good defensively.

The idea that two box to box midfielders offer enough defensively over the course of the season has been one that let us down time and time again in the past. It might be alright on paper or in one off games - and the quality is admittedly higher than the likes of jenas /zokora - but if Sandro is injured and we're left with Paulinho /Dembele with sigg or holtby then long term we will may be a lot weaker without a defensive option.

Who knows though, perhaps I'm reading too much into those comments and he's disciplined and tough enough to play a more defensive game too.

'It is important for the team and the Brazilian fans that at the moment all my focus is on winning the Confederations Cup - but after the tournament is finished I hope it is a deal that can get finalised quickly,' said Paulinho.

'To play in England for a great team like Tottenham is a dream. What I respect about Tottenham is the ambition they have shown.

'This summer there has been interest in their coach and their best player - and they have been clear they both are not going anywhere.

'When my agent made me aware that Tottenham were interested I knew it would not be a move that I could turn down.

I should imagine this is the case and should it be required, AVB will instruct him to do a job for the team as it were.

Not all box to box midfielders are the same.

Paulinho has looked very disciplined for Brazil, of course that's his national team in a high profile tournament. I do know that Dembele is very disciplined though.

It also depends on formation. A 4-4-2 with Zokora and Jenas in the centre is very different from a 4-3-3 with (for example) Paulinho, Dembele and Holtby in the centre. I think the latter of those would be very solid (based on limited viewing of Paulinho mind).

Yeah that seems to be the case.

Seems very destructive though. Not the most creative, but hey, at least Lennon will be more of an orthodox right sided player than the funny looking Hulk

Thanks for posting that mate, really good read.

It's funny that he talks about Paulinho exploiting space because when I watched him on Wednesday he seemed like a player obsessed with finding space whilst also having a pair of lungs the size of helium balloons. I can understand why people are saying that we need a striker first and foremost but this lad would be a great addition to squad, as we saw when one of or both Sandro and Dembele were injured we were left very short and this guy would not only make up the numbers but also give us another dynamic to our game, strengthening the squad as whole.
