David Beckham Announces Retirement, Lovely Gesture

Couldn't care less about beckham and glad hes retired although i guess this wont be the last il hear of him

I swear there's at least twice as much crap being published on Beckham now compared to Fergie last week.

Well done golden balls, far from being the most talented footy player, no doubt one of the most iconic and successful at club level.

Seems like a hard working nice lad too. Very glam life, Posh wants it that way, no doubt he does too.

id like to think he'll retire and ride off in to the sunset and enjoy his millions of pounds away from the public eye so i no longer have to have Brand Beckham shoved in my face all the time, but then that would be foolish of me.

 Amazes me that people get so emotional when talking about him.

Fergie got rid of him because the sideshow that his associated fame created.

Would people honestly say he's an England legend based on the fact that the furthest he got in a tournament was the quarter finals?

Fergie got rid of him, as he does all players who's status threatens Fergie ...

Since England has a brick record in any kind of tournament, judging Beckham that way is being a bit cheeky, Giggs is not a Wales legend? but they don't even qualify for major tournaments on that logic. Fact is, the guy was a model Pro and team player, people try to judge him as the type of player that wins games consistently on his own, that wasn't his game, he improved the team and created opportunities for others.

Not sure why English people need to put down their own, the guy achieved a hell of a lot, without being the most naturally gifted of his generation, well done, move on.

Never rated Beckham. If he looked like Luke Chadwick then his career would be at the same level as Luke Chadwick's. He will be remembered, not for being a footballer, but for being a celebrity footballer.

He was at the forefront of modern football, totally dictated by money. Bought by Madrid, LA Galaxy and PSG to sell shirts and nothing more

Absolute puerile tosh.

Pettiness and irrational, media driven hatred (jealousy?) throughout a lot of these threads. We, as a club, would have died to have someone of his ability, dedication and drive over the last 2 decades. Not the most naturally talented but he as sure as damn made the most of the very good ability he did have. So he made what he could on the back of it. Fair play to him. Nothing every other footballer tries to do and lots of other z list nobodies as well. At least he put in the miles at the same time and didn't ask for or expect a free ride.

Give the guy a generous good bye. He has earned it.

Anyone who doesn't like him/doesn't think he is brilliant is jealous. Complete fallacy. You could use that arguement for hundreds of footballers, people don't like Ronaldo; they're jealous. People don't like Michael Owen; they are jealous. He's made a lot of money through his football ability, but also hugely because of his looks, good luck to him, I don't begrudge him for that in the slightest.

There is absolutely no doubt he is a great ambassador not only the game, but for our country. But ever since the fallout from the 98 World Cup, he's become teflon in some people's eyes. I mean he made minimal impact for PSG, made 1 start, and people are acting like he played a big part in them winning the title. Call me cynical, but I believe PSG mainly got him for merchandising reasons. The evidence is in the fact that they hardly played him.

If you want to give him credit for winning trophies with United and Madrid, fair enough, he deserves praise for his performances at those clubs, but I have no idea why people bring up his MLS title when discussing him, would anyone really care if Frank Lampard or Ibrahimovic won the MLS title?

My main point is that players such as Linekar, Gazza, Shearer, Owen, Beardsley and Platt to name a few made bigger impacts for England in tournaments, but those players aren't idolised anywhere near as much. I honestly wouldn't put him in the top 15 or so England players of all time because I don't think he contributed enough to warrant it.

@leytonorientfc: Already had a few phone calls but to clear things up Beckham's last game is against FC Lorient not us

:ross:

Never forget that goal against the mighty Greece.... and the haircuts. oh yes a penalty against Argentina. If he didn't play for Man U he would have been labelled a water carrier. The way people are talking about his talents like he was equal to Hoddle. He was no where near as talented or graceful on the pitch

The guy made the most of his talents, all of them. You have to admire his determination to succeed if nothing else.

Was a very good player, not the greatest, but he made it happen for himself. He's got to get credit for that.

On a related note, bbc running a 'who was greater Beckham, Owen or Scholes.' The fudge is Owen doing anywhere near the other two.

Two starts actually, one of them in the Champions League, but I suppose Ancelotti only started him in that so that they would sell more shirts?

I don't see how other people overrating him is Beckham's fault? He's always seemed like a model professional to me, evidenced in part by how both Redknapp and Wenger were happy to have him along in training when they could make it fit.

He wasn't good enough to pull your average national side into a good run in an international tournament? Big whoop. Same would go for every English player since Euro '96 at the very least.

Scholes is the answer.

I wont listen to Beckham haters its just pure jealousy.

Love the bloke, what he has done for football, for UK and thought he was world class.

I would actually sleep with him. Massive man crush.

I wouldn't put him in the top 15 or probably even 50 but there is so much anti because he made very good on his ability down to hard work.

Would rate him higher than Platt though.

Owen performed better for England in the big games, I don't know how that can be disputed. Scored against all the big nations too unlike Crouch who scored all his goals against Jamaica.

But yeah Scholes hands down was better than the other two. Scholes was so understated and never wanted any attention, it's a shame his retirement has been overshadowed.
