31 years old and no sell on value. Unproven in the English League. My guess is a loan deal, and to make it worthwhile I hope that there are some younger players involved.

Loan would be perfect. At that age it's not a very Spurs type signing, or at least which makes financial sense. And we need to be frugal. Signings like this need to ensure CL qualification otherwise it would be classed as a failure.

You have to think with him up front this season instead of Defoe / Ade we wouldve already had 3rd or 4th in the bag

I would have thought so. I guess for me the fear is always we take a big gamble on big wages and then the lad gets injured. Then we miss out on CL and have a Leeds situation. Bit far fetched maybe and I guess there are times when you have to gamble. If we do one of these experienced players I think it's important we don't get too many.

Villa could be our Davids, Klinsmann, Naybet-esque signing. Although younger and more to offer.

We'll see.still see the scum going in for him.

I agree with what you say but any player could get injured, Bale could break his leg 1st game of next year, you just dont know do you...

I'm not sure how this makes me feel. On the one hand he's clearly a talented player, however on the other it's clearly a stop-gap measure.

The story originates from Spanish radio station Cadena Ser - Which state: "David Villa, in the absence of small details, will play next season at Tottenham, whose manager has seduced the Asturian striker to play there next year."

There's your radio station.

Pending a few details, Barcelona forward David Villa (31) will join English club Tottenham this summer. [ser]

I assume [ser] is a Spanish newspaper

Tottenham coach Villas-Boas was earlier this month in Barcelona. He personally convinced David Villa to join the English club. [ser]

yeah....

1-transfer fee to be agreed
2-salary to be agreed
3-Spurs to qualify for the CL

just a few details indeed;)

AVB may have had a chat and convinced Villa, but we all know who the main man in all this is who will make or break any deal

There's your radio station.

He's less than a year older than Defoe, he's had his injury problems, but to me at least he's no more a stop-gap measure than keeping JD.

I think going for someone like Villa and then bringing in someone younger like Rebic for example can be a good solution, one "stop-gap" and one to develop over the next couple of seasons.

You can never be sure, always a chance of a transfer failing. Especially with a player coming into a new league, but I would be very excited if we managed to sign Villa. And equally I wouldn't be happy if he signed for Arsenal, I really wouldn't.

All that being said, some radio station in Spain? Any reason to think they would know what's going on? Not getting my hopes up just yet.

True, but keeping Defoe wouldn't affect our ability to sign a different striker. Buying Villa would, because he'll cost money.

I don't know if he'd fail or not, that's not in my thinking at the moment with Villa.

The fees that have been mentioned in the media haven't been outrageous. And they haven't been massively in excess of what I think we could get for Defoe if we choose to sell him. And I think he would most likely be a significant upgrade on Defoe.

I get what you're saying, there would be an opportunity cost involved. And if going for Villa means that we can't go for one of our other, younger targets like Damiao then of course that's worth considering.

Ah true. If we could sell Defoe for 10m and then buy Villa for 10m it'd be a bit of a coup. I hadn't thought about it like that.

Just trying to think more long term really. Would hope we buy at least one striker under the age of 25 this summer.

£10m for Villa would be excellent business. He's a top quality striker, and a proven goalscorer at the highest level. The concern would obviously be how he adjusts to the PL after spending all his career in Spain, but it's worth the gamlbe, IMO.

Villa for £10 plus another, younger and talented striker, would make me happy.

Stop-gap or not, if he can help us qualify for the Champions League for the next couple of seasons then his acquisition will be more than justified.

Regarding his size, like Silva, Mata, Aguero and Fabregas, if fit and well Villa will have no trouble adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. Ability trumps physicality.

it would be a gamble, 10m for a 31 year old is not good business regardless who he is. If we do buy him and don´t get CL football next season, then we have flushed 10m down the toilet
