If we were talking about replacing first choice players with wholly inexperienced or inadequate players, then I'd agree.

But since Friedel and Gallas are vastly experienced - in fact, our most experienced players - and since both of them are still very capable players, it's not a problem, IMO. Gallas, especially, might be better suited to a European game than, say, Caulker.

This isn't like last season, when we played quite a few young'uns who had little or no experience of senior football.

I have no problems with Gallas playing but AVB is on record as saying that we want to win this trophy, then surely we should play our best keeper who is Lloris, I was really shocked when Brad signed a new contract with us perhaps this is something to do with it, imo the back five should be kept as settled as possible.

I'd prefer that Hugo played in this game too.

But I'm happy to trust AVB's judgement. Even if picking Brad isn't, as some have claimed, to keep him sharp, it could just be that AVB thinks that Brad deserves the occasional game and that, as per earlier in the season, those occasional games should be in cup competitions.
 
I guess AVB has a gentleman's agreement with Brad to play in this comp. I think it weakens us slightly but I trust Brad and he deserves a start every now and then. I predict Brad will be doing his best Beckenbauer impression tonight with our high line.

Gallas I'm not 100% sure about. Towards the end of games he is running on empty and his experience won't be worthatoss if this happens. Maybe the game will be slower paced and it will help him. Dawson and Vertonghen would be my choice.

Really looking forward to tonight's game. Got to love European nights. Lyon are't no mugs neither. Would love to win this, go on to then beat Inter Milan then perhaps someone like Napoli in the quarter finals, Atletico Madrid in the semis before beating Chelsea in the fudging final!
 
I notice that a few people have been commenting on the fact that this game hasn't sold out.

I guess that the date has a lot to do with it. Three of our usual group not able to make it tonight because their lives would be forfeit if they weren't doing something with their mrs. There are not enough brownie points in the world...
