The Inbetween Transfer Windows Rumour Thread

But surely a businessman would see spending 22-24m on a player as a better investment than 14m on two poor players? Firstly the better player will help improve the team, secondly may help to bring in additional revenue by helping us get CL and thirdly a player of a higher quality will maintain his value.

I agree with your sentiments that they are all businessmen and spurs is a business as well as a football club

I would actually rather we spent 2 x $14M than 1 x $28M

A $14M player should still be bloody good. If you go the 1 x $28M player, you're really putting all your eggs in one basket. What if he flops? Gets injured?

I guess it all depends on circumstances. When we made CL, I think a $28M player (striker) would have been the preferred option as the squad was set.

Now, there are more than a few holes, and some key players who have left. It's going to take more than a $28M player who, let's face it, isn't quite good enough to attract the attentions of the Big $$$ clubs.

Akqayid has posted something on SC: Now.... Erickson (Eriksen I suppose) or Mourts - let Levy decide.

Never easy to tell when he's serious and when he's just overexcited.

...then let the player decide which of the other clubs who are either (a) already in the CL or (b) realistically have a chance of making it for next year that he wants to join.

Although I would love Eriksen or Moutinho

If we're sitting 6th/7th and over 10 points off 4th then we can basically assume that January will be another month of outrageous ITK and then players out of our league rejecting us again.

(yep, I'm back to being glass half empty again now!)

I'm really not convinced by Eriksen. He tends to do a very good impression of Jonathan Blondel at international level.

I think he may be a Afonso Alves/Kezman type Eredivisie player, rather than the Verts type. The Eredivisie can be a bit like the SPL when it comes to players who look good in it.

Being a dane, I have to admit I feel a bit reluctant of signing Eriksen. He keeps playing well for Ajax in the league and in the CL, but he tends to fade away when playing for Denmark. What I think is needed is a player like Cazorla, who all the time gets involved and create chances. Although Eriksen's a great talent, he's no way that player yet. He's more or less a smaller, more elegant and faster version of Sigurdsson.

However he hesitates to extend his contract with Ajax, which runs out in july 2014, so if Ajax want to cash in it's likely they'll do it in january. Would definately prefer Willian, but Eriksen might be the cheaper option.

The main issue is if he becomes that player, then we will be out of the race to sign him.

Modric was a great talent as wasn't that player yet neither. I am not comparing Eriksens game to Modric as they are totally different in pretty much every possible but the point I am making is that we aren't THAT team who will sign established stars over the likes of the bigger teams who will probably end up getting them. If we get Eriksen in for a reasonable price and knowing Levy it will be more than reasonable, he performs here and he stays or he leaves for a big profit on our part.

Nah, Eriksen is the real deal.

I'm not too sure. I watched him closely at the Euros and he looked out of his depth.

Generally speaking I do think a club like Spurs has to take an occasional punt on player who may develop into top talent. We cannot compete with the carbon circle clubs for the world class guys so buying a rising star is a good option.

why would it be Moutinho or Eriksen??? they are different types of players

I guess you're right, but if Arsenal were able to bring in someone like Cazorla for 16M, I still believe it's possible to sign someone that is top class. Eriksen's price has been rumoured to be around 15-20M. If that's the case, then I think it would be wiser to pay the extra 5-10M and get someone who is top class already.

Could be that if Moutinho is brought in, Dembele will be pushed further up in the attacking midfield role, whereas if Eriksen is brought in, he will play that position.

Levy is not ambitious enough, wish he would just fudge off

How ambitious should he be?

Should he allow Spurs to run up growing debt in the hope that spending beyond the club's means on player transfers and wages will earn us Champions League qualification?

And what if we still fall short? Spend even more money that the club doesn't have? Where does it end?

Perhaps, if your wish is granted and Levy does indeed fudge off, you'll be happy if his replacement is Peter Risdale? He was ambitious, right?

Obviously, everyone is in a bit of a tizzy at the moment because of the recent, poor run of form and especially because of Saturday's thumping at the hands of our local rivals. But now's not the time to panic or to start pointing fingers wildly.

Levy has his faults, certainly. But, short of being bought by a philanthropic multi-billionaire, we couldn't possibly be in better hands. In Levy's time at the club, we've taken a few steps back. And maybe this season will be one of those. But the overall pattern during his tenure has been one of consistent improvement.

His achievement is all the more impressive given that it has been against the backdrop of a clutch of clubs that had an apparent monopoly on the hugely rewarding Champions League berths (with the exposure and other financial rewards that go with it); and a couple of other clubs that have been beneficiaries of a mind boggling degree of financial doping. To have established ourselves at the level that we have been for most of the past seven years is therefore little short of miraculous.

Of course Levy is still hugely ambitious for the club. Unlike you, however, he understands that ambition must be tempered by prudence. Unlike you, he is prepared to remain patient in the pursuit of glory.
