iPhone 5 - to be announced today

Can someone explain to me what people are talking about when they say existing apps are letter boxed? What does that mean? and why is it a bad thing etc?

The screen is bigger but the app stays the same size. A nightmare for developers as they now need 3? iPhone versions and an iPad version.
 
Why would you back up your contacts and calendar to icloud?

Wouldn't you just sync them to your mail account like Gmail? That's what I do.

Think MS are planning on doing some back up thing similar to icloud for settings, docs etc with SkyDrive.
 
I'm not getting this because I can't justify the cost. I've got 12 months left so I'll just upgrade October 2013 when my contract is up and get the next revision of the phone. The jump I made from 3gs to 4s was staggering but I'm kidding myself if that's ever going to happen again unless I just wait until the iphone 6.

Apple can't really do much, let's be honest, aside from incremental upgrades which is what they do best.

Bigger screen, but not too big. Fair enough, more room for my twitter timeline but this isn't something that has me salivating. I guess with the missus buying me a 64Gb ipad in January I'm okay to do my gaming and reading on that when home and just use my phone for music and social media when out.

New design? Makes not a blind bit of difference to me because I'm always going to stick the phone in a case. I'd rather it's beauty be hidden then smashed to bits.

The other stuff, the cpu and RAM and other improvements, are fine but going from a 4s to a 5 wont see me foaming with delight really.

I've got to be honest, holding onto a phone for 2 years is the way I do things because I feel like I get the most out of it. I'll stick with Apple though mainly because I'm happy. Build wise it still bricks over everything else.

I think if Apple really do want to step up the game I think they need to revise iOS completely. Overhaul the brick out of it. Make me NOT want to jailbreak it. Freshen it up.
 
Before I say anything I'll let you know I own a iPhone I'm due an upgrade in November I most likely will get a 5 but I'll do some research see what I like.

Basically want to ask one question? Why Do the hardcore apple fans take it so personally when someone states their opinions on certain apple products. I've hardly seen anyone on this thread criticise apple products just a couple say they don't think there are many great improvements and people are getting their knickers in a twist acting is their iPhone is a family member they have to Defend all a bit sad really. Same goes for pes vs FIFA threads and mac vs pc, stop taking it so personal.

LOL. this has been happening since the dawn of time my friend. C64 vs spectrum on the playground for me. sad, but inevitable. i am still trying to work out what the most innovative, new, impressive aspect of the new iphone is though?
not a flaming thing, genuinely interested to know what people think the "best" thing about it is?
and to clarify, to me, "it's an apple" is not an answer that justifies me upgrading to it.

To be fair, people with Android phones are worst because they act they're better for not falling for Apple's blatant brain washing. Whatever you choose to buy in life is you're on decision on what best suits you so the phone you own is likely going to be the best phone on the market (for you). The defending aspect is part of the consumer war that the likes of Apple and Samsung love because it keeps everyone talking about it (that and spending £500 on a piece of kit would make anyone defensive).

Fair enough, but I'd be very surprised if there wasn't an app on Android able to do the same thing. For all my accounts, calendars, messages and stuff I just do like P.D. say, I use my Gmail.

I've worked with iPhones for over a year, and the simple answer is no. Add to that a horrible service policy for damaged phones.

What!? What other company allows you to turn up at the store and walk away with a replacement product whether it was your fault or not? Where do you go if a Samsung phone breaks?

As for the product, I'm still waiting for justification on why apple deserve all this pre-release coverage? So I've seen features of a bigger screen, a minor camera software upgrade and a new chip. Upgrades common with all manufacturers on a new release.

Now as for my opinion on the product my view is justified. I'm a programmer by trade and familiar with development for mobile devices. From my experience a huge chunk of iPhone owners have minimal technological skills and understanding yet are quick to slate a competitors product without reason.

Now I'm not saying apple products are not good, in fact I think they are stylish in the sense of being visually pleasing. What I would like to understand though is what makes them so far superior to deserve the attention it receives prior to release compared to their conpetitors?

Sorry mate but in your first post you didn't offer much of an opinion on the phone, you offered your opinion on the people who use one.

Even if you do break it, Apple customer service is up there with the best. Ive known of a load of people outside the warranty window and Apple have replaced it free of charge.

Ive just cracked mine and its £50 to replace at some dodgy looking phone place

Okay, if that's the case in other countries then I'll moderate myself, because this isn't how it works here. But if this is true then I find it a bit strange.

It is the same at every Apple store around the world. I used to work at one in Sydney. You make an appointment for a damaged iPhone and in most cases you'll walk away with a replacement (if it is actually faulty).

If you dropped it, got water on it or damaged it some other way, then of course you'll have to pay (or if it's faulty outside the warranty period).

I don't know any other store that you can walk into a year after you bought the product and have it replaced on the spot. That is partly why Apple Stores have been so absurdly successful.
 
For anyone on Three...

I rang them earlier and they said they wont take pre orders or upgrades over the phone, you can pre order from their stores from tomorrow...

if you pay for, ANY store will let you walk away with a replacement?

maybe not on the spot, but about 3 years ago, i had an HTC, that was 21 months old. it broke. i sent it back to them, because it's a 2 year warranty. they sent me a brand new set within a week. personally, i was quite happy about that. there are (according to wikipedia) 34 apple stores in the whole of the UK to walk into i suppose, so they are relatively local to most... don't know about samsung, never had a problem with the samsungs i've owned yet, so no idea how their customer services in that manner apply.

If your iPhone's battery only lasts 2 hours and you've had it for 7 months, you will most likely have it replaced on the spot for free.

If you drop your iPhone in the pool at any time and it stops working, you'll have to pay a fee to have it replaced. In Australia, it was $250 when a new phone costed around $700, not sure about UK prices.

If I didn't have my phone for a week, I wouldn't know what to do (a sad indictment on myself but I'm sure one most can relate to), so the Apple Stores are great if you have any issues.
