Another angle that needs to be mentioned here is we are automatically thinking we are talking about adults.
Many many people carry traits/ behavioural patterns from their childhood. If you do nothing about it via self work or therapists etc they will persist, probably forever. Repeating patterns, anyone?
Relatable to this thread...Trust issues is one, not being able to deal with authority is another. Unless you tried to work on this in adulthood, you're still emotionally a child in these areas. It's locked in.
SM comes along, and unknowingly to someone with these issues, it is the biggest negative that could happen. Conversely they subconsciously are feeling it's a positive. They can feed it, they find their tribe, their silo, their rabbit hole and they find people just like them, with the same issue. The behaviour then feels normal, even justified.....and biggest of all CONSTANT!.
Look around in your own group of family and friends as an exercise ....(you'd have to know someone pretty well) to see how the roots of their behaviours have migrated to modern times and media.
