Yep, got ahead of things and got his narrative and sob story out there.
I read mixed things about him in respect of Clacton, but he must be pretty sure he will win.
Labour will need to field a very strong candidate.
What will be interesting is that surely Rupert Lowe will want Restore to put up a candidate - could be a vote splitter.

I guess a constituency like that won't have anyone other than the Tories as an alternative. Do they have anyone half decent and fairly moderate all parties could coalesce around? Penny Mordaunt or Justine Greening or someone?

I think he wins again and I think it then write the next 12 months of rhetoric for him "my people love me" "they and the public (well Clacton) have spoken" "We want change" ........... I also think its a small dig at Burnham for not having a GE
IF he loses he also wins, because he can walk off in the sunset with an excuse in tow.
I think its a very smart move from him and changes the media narrative for a while

Labour have never had more than about 28% of vote share there. It's only ever been UKIP, Tory and Reform.
All parties need to tacitly support the Tory candidate, like happened with Greens and Labour at the two recent Manchester elections
yes, was just about to edit my post to say Labour have no chance.
I think at the last election Labour put up a candidate but didn't actively campaign, if my memory serves me right, which it may well not.
Its a referendum on him. Bring David Miliband back and stand him against Nige and he is the only chance Labour has.
And he gets to push the Standards Commissioner's enquiry down the line

Have you ever been to Clacton? They'd firebomb Miliband for being too intellectual, just on the basis that he wears glasses. It's the most extreme right wing place in the UK. Being Jewish might genuinely be an issue for him there.

Chris Mason makes an interesting point, that when David Davis pulled a similar stunt in 2008, the other parties refused to be drawn into the circus of it and just didn't humour/contest the by-election

I think Restore will land some major blows on Farage looking at it. If the people of Clacton were willing to vote Reform you would think a few upset will jump to Restore making them more dangerous than in a Labour safe seat like before.

The Irony is, he's the establishment, educated at a fairly exclusive private school, millionaire banker and jet setter amongst the global elite and we are the people.

Yes, he can win an election in a seat he had already won. And he gets to say 'look I'm popular' , yes, we know you're popular, but we are still need to find out if you're fit and proper.
And of course we launch whatever this is with the dog whistle of 'me v the establishment' .Yawn.

If the Tories put up a decent candidate they might, Restore and Reform will split the vote in Clacton more than Makerfield

I actually think people are getting tired of him and he could lose. But the electorate never fail to amaze me at their ability to elect a completely unsuitable candidate. Would be interesting if Rupert Lowe stood against him.
