Lucas Bergvall

Hmm, feels like these 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st 1st stats are made up.

Is Bergvall really 1st in the PL in those items listed? All of them? Crosses, accelerations, all of them?
Those kind of lists are typically cherry picked. Pr 90 or total, find a handful + out of the very many individual stats that makes the player look particularly good.

Can only do that if a player is doing well enough. So it tells us he's done well, we already knew that though.

I suppose the only thing which matters is that Bergvall is the 1st name on our team sheet based upon current form.
Du you think he is that?

I'm kinda doubtful. Think he's still in that "if the circumstances are right" category, but the circumstances are widening.

Also curious what the plan is going forward with him. If we'll see him deployed a bit deeper like last season or if the more attacking of the midfielder is the role Frank sees as his best.

I really like Sarr, and for some games he's absolutely a nailed on starter. But would find it interesting to see a midfield trio of Palhinha, Bergvall and Simons at some point

I think I'd be happiest if we keep rotating this midfield AND getting results. There seemed to be a lot of narratives last season that our midfield wasn't good enough and it only worked if the best eleven was on the pitch. So many of us called out the manager's tactics. I've even read narratives this season exclusively providing credit to Palhinha as if one 30 year old can make the single difference. They were more the corner case though, not the common opinion.

In reality, Frank knows what he's doing with these guys. We've seen the main 4 (Bents, Pal, Berg and Sarr) do well this season. Frank will be keen to grow that number of contributors to 6 or 7 so we can really manage the workload. That could even include Biss as he returns to full fitness but will hopefully also include Gray. As for Xavi, it would be really interesting to see him more centrally.

Our midfield was definitely unbalanced last season. And has been so this season too. Particularly on the ball/attacking I'd argue it's our biggest weakness at the moment.

Palhinha has made a significant difference. But he can't fix the stuff he isn't good at.

Really hope Gray continues to be given significant minutes and that he keeps developing. Really wonderful player in the making.

Could not agree more he is what we have missed from our CM for a while. In a lot of games last season you could drive a truck through our CM [ lots of times opposing teams did just that]. As you say he is not going to provide moments of magic [ that is not what he is there for] but he gives our CM some stability which we badly needed.

We have signed some really exciting/talented players in the summer for sure but his coming has finally filled a massive hole in our CM.

Intelligence and experience always count for a lot in the middle of the park. Palhinha is a good get, but for me Frank is the bigger get.

Last season was equally to do with the tactics as the personnel in my mind. Our 3 centre mids were told to split left, right and central and move up into the high press. That pitch was 70m wide and we got passed through for 18 months. Of course there was a massive hole.....in the tactics. Have a feeling Palhinha in an Ange system may have ignored instructions and done what he does best though. He would have also communicated with his team mates a lot better than what we saw. He would have formed a better protective shield.

In the games that Bents did play as a holding 6 last season we were actually a different and better team. We evolved into that and even a double pivot and would not be EL champions without those transitions in my mind. Bents isn't as natural as Palhinha though in that position.

Only watched the last 30-35 minutes of the game, but imo really good and somewhat intriguing to see him play a bit deeper with Simons as the 10/AM.

If/when he's good enough defensively I think that mostly fixes our ball progression and creativity issues deep in midfield.

A team with Bergvall, Simons, Kudus and then a left winger and striker to add to the ball playing quality we have from our full backs and especially Romero of our centre backs. That's imo an attacking force to be reckoned with. Obviously won't be the solution for all games or all phases of games, but that's a great attacking option to have.

I agree. We discussed yesterday how a 4-2-3-1 could be really really good for us in that regard.

Against Brighton, a ball was fired across the goalmouth twice and both times, Bergvall arrived 0.3 seconds after the defender, who cleared it.
A game of inches and milliseconds.
He could have scored twice.

In the end he had a medium game, tried hard but lots of things he tried didn't come off and he actually seemed to be trying too hard, charging up and down and left and right and sometimes being a bit in the way, but BOY did he try hard. Very close to being an exceptionally good game from him, but somehow nothing quite fell for him vs Brighton.

As he matures he should know when to bust a gut and when to do the smart thing and crucially, arrive 0.5 seconds sooner to score 2 goals.

Didn't watch the full Brighton game, but this very much matches my impression of him from what I saw and other games.

Being able to play the game a a different tempo and a bit more maturity with his decision making are definitely things to look for with his development.

I do also think that most advanced/10 role seems to lead him to play more like that.

Because it reduces the TV friendly hustle and tussle in the box?

It's a little bit odd, because players cross the boundry lines multiple times during a game without it being an issue.
You're not allowed to leave the field of play to gain an advantage or some such rule iirc. Accidentally doing so, falling over after a duel etc is allowed.

Think those rules have been there for a long time. Quick thinking from Bergvall, but unfortunately not allowed.

Cheers, that is a sensible rule.

On second thoughts it would have course be incredibly chaotic to allow players to run behind the goal on corners.

I wonder if today's VAR would have chalked off this classic Bale goal?

I was thinking about that goal, actually - never say never with VAR, but as he was basically pushed over the line, there shouldn't be a problem here.
