So realistically the number 10 is the priority and a left forward if we get rid of Richie, if we don’t Richie and Solanke will be the strikers and Tel and Odobert will be rotating for the left side. That gives us enough cover in every position but the number 10 but if Madders and Kulu return early that is a more than enough players to cover all of these positions. They might not be the quality that we need but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Poch had to go a few transfer windows before getting rid of everyone he didn’t want.

I agree with all of that, except I'd keep Tel full time on the left (let him and Odobert fight that out), and I'd bring in a proper CF (for Richy).

He's perfectly fine as long as he's not under pressure, under pressure he struggles a bit - still fine, but not much more. Vicario by a similar standard (imo) is perfectly fine. Palhinha is also perfectly fine.

Romero is excellent under pressure, as is Porro imo. Udogie and Spence are really good at not losing the ball and at progression through dribbling/carrying, somewhat less so passing, but still good. VDV is similar imo.

So depends what the standard is for perfectly fine. And what is seen as necessary for the team. Imo we need better ball progression when under pressure overall. Dragusin doesn't give us that, but others can. Along with having a target for long balls that may also mitigate the need for players that are better than perfectly fine deeper somewhat.

It should be less of an issue under Frank and I think he'll do well. But we'll still have ball progression issues unless we strengthen elsewhere, with or without Dragusin, but more so with him than Romero fit example.

We’re talking about a 4th choice CB, I think he’s perfectly fine for a player who won’t play a huge amount of games.

If Romero is the standard level of ball playing CB you want then no one will match up.

I think he’s about level with Danso in general, it’s just Danso seems capable of playing both sides thankfully, whereas I don’t think Dragusin can.

Danso also seems more mobile. I’ve been very impressed with him since he joined, barely out a foot wrong and always seems up for it.

Great to be in a position where our first backup CB is such high quality.

Danso is a lot more comfortable on the ball from what we've seen, under pressure and put if it. He's good good pass selection and conformable moving with it as well.

Yea I like Danso, but he had some wobbles at the end of last season as well with the ball. Just think we should wait till Dragusin plays at RCB in a proper side before saying he’s no good on the ball. He’s a one footed player and playing him on the wrong side will cause an issue, just like if you were to play VDV on the right.

I think the biggest question is what pairings we have. I think it is easy to analyse one player's strengths and weaknesses over another but centre half play is about combinations. We've become quite accustomed to the Romero / VDV and see the pace and ability, but conveniently forget that they have no aerial presence. Perhaps Palhinha could even change that equation slightly from set pieces.

For Dragu, he is likely to be paired with VDV if we want to give Romero a rest. I've not seen so much of that combination.
 
Linked again with Conor Gallagher. Can you imagine... a team full of destroyers and pitbulls. We might have 100% possession but zero idea what to do once we have it!

I didn't set Romero as the standard, unless you're saying the standard is excellent.

I'm saying we need more players with more ball playing ability and ability to progress the ball in our squad. Having one or two players who are excellent at that isn't enough. That can be done with or without Dragusin.

Last season we were very reliant on Maddison, Romero and Porro for some of those things imo. 1-2 injuries to those and we struggled, I don't think that will be sustainable. So we need more good to great to excellent players at that. Kudus helps. But we need more over time to get to where we want to imo.

Said it in the squad thread, it depends on the timing. Very hard to see (not impossible) us being top 4 this season, too far a leap from 17th, new manager, etc.

If you look at last season, keep the losses down to 10-12 and you are in with a shout for top 6.

I think Frank makes us hard to beat, and back line plus two sitting (with Paulinha) that we have now, does that. I think Porro/Romero carry the passing from deep, Sarr/Udogie will carry the ball, Wilson/Kudus are the line breakers, and I think Solanke gets a lot more service than prior and puts in 18-20 goals (Frank's forwards score). Obvious until Deki/Maddison come back we are missing a midfield passer/tempo setting player, that's probably the main need before window closes.

I think we start there, add in Jan (as Frank knows squad more), and then look to upgrade again next summer. May not be the popular opinion but think that's how it plays out.

I think we all want that, but don’t think we need to hold it against a 4th choice CB who’s played most of his career with us on the wrong side in injury ravaged, knackered team. I’m saying he’s good enough for what we want in that squad position / hierarchy and the ball skills issue is being well over exaggerated anyway.

Personally I agree with this approach.

We've seen you can score all the goals you want, means sweet FA if defend like clowns

Let's get the good foundations on and build on it
