Just seen the highlights of the Belgium/Netherlands game..
Has there been any talk of looking at Mertens? Think he'd be a fine addition to compete for the 2 wing positions

of course it'll never happen. but I wouldn't mind us exchanging all our old Croatian contingent for a new and improved Belgian influence. Verts, Dembele, Mertens, even Witsel would all be welcome imo

How much do we think it would cost, and how likely would it be that he'd want to join, and how worth it would it be, to replace Modric with the man that Modric once replaced...
fudge him overrated we did good business getting rid of him and besides I don't think he is much better than what we have already at CM, and could argue worse

Losing him put us back a couple of years. He is a great player and I'm the opposite of you, I think he is very underrated.

I remember this discussion here on GG when we had Carrick. A lot of people who did not understand his role were always on and on about he was not good enough. While with Spurs, he was one of the best DM´s I´ve seen in my lifetime

Signing him, then losing him, then signing Modric illustrated the necessity of a deep lying playmaker. In the 04/05 and 05/06 seasons when Carrick was here we had a very strong defensive record because we were so good at maintaining possession and if the opposition can't get the ball off you then they can't score! Then we replaced him with Zokora and in the next two seasons (06/07 and 07/08) we had a dreadful goals against column. There are obviously other factors, but as soon as we signed another deep lying playmaker in Modric then our defensive record massively improved again.
Carrick is not as good as Modric, and probably won't want to come back, but if he's available on the cheap and Porto won't budge from their Moutinho valuation then perhaps he'd be a good option for us.

I'm not denying that but we had a shower of brick in our squad at the time. Now we have Siggy, Huddlestone, Sandro, Parker and Livermore. We are miles ahead of where we were than. i would pick Parker and Sandro ahead of him and Livermore keeps improving maybe him as well. He isn't a bad player but hardly a repalcement for Modric as many have said he is a true DM doesn't play anything like Modric imo.

Modric gone on Sunday, Adebayor and M'Vila / Moutinho Monday, Leandro and Lloris next Friday.
