Not exactly gospel given the source, but Harry did say that they thought they'd tied up a deal for Mata - only for Chelsea to come in late.

like we were close to Rossi and Aguero once upon a time i guess

but we dont pay the wages or have CL to offer.....these are top players with top clubs after them. If Hazard didnt go to Chelsea, he'd have gone to Utd or City. If Mata didnt go to Chelsea, he'd have gone to Arse

this Chelsea obsession is a pathetic excuse. We need to be looking at players at the next level below. Like Vert, like Siggy, carry on like this. i wonder why dint Chelsea buy them:rolleyes:

We need to get in there first and act quickly to stand a chance really. Besides a new stadium I think we need back-to-back CL seasons to really become a top attraction.

I agree with this. Chelsea winning the CL final changed the class of player we could get here in one fell swoop. fudgers.

It just means that we have to be clever in how we pursue our targets, or take a risk on players who are not the complete package. If you look at our squad now this approach has been reasonably successful to date. I'm pretty sure there are deals being worked on now that nobody is aware of except the top movers and shakers in the the club.

I see Modric wasn't in the squad today. What do people read into that?

We were never close to Mata, he had a clause in his contract allowing him to go for 17m or something around that by a certain date which we met but he didnt want to talk to us.

That he hasn't trained with the rest and isn't mentally ready. Until his situation has been resolved I would keep him away for team moral. IF he stays he will have to prove himself to oust those that have been playing in his absense.

According to the ITKs are transfer dealings now depend on us selling Modric, so does that mean if Madrid were not in for Modric we would not have money to spend to strengthen right now?

Except Redknapp never said that about either of those players. He come out and directly said we thought we had Mata....

ok, where is the 19 mill that it would have taken to get Mata.....we havent spent it, if we are that flush what the feck is going on

I am stunned that management have been unable to secure a quality striker considering how desperate we are. Where are all the people that have claimed Adebayor is a done deal?

It's all about cash flow. I don't expect our finance people to stockpile cash for when we need it. I expect we have a banking partner that offer a healthy credit should we need it.

Given we only have 13 days til the start of the season, am starting to think that the new stadium is having a much greater drain on our finances than a lot of us believe or are lead to believe. Net spend over the last few windows of a single figure number of £m plus our inactivity this window tend to suggest that.

Maybe we just need to accept that we wont be spending a net double digit millions in any window for the next 3-4 years and that we should accept/expect finishing in say 5th-8th but then us improving thereafter as the spending on the stadium finishes and cashflow improves?

Not a great business plan, because if you finish top 4 and get into the champions league you look to gain 50m+ which would fund a decent number of transfers, or pay off the stadium debt that much faster..

It wouldnt surprise me.

I think we have money if the right player is available as we always have done.

If what you are saying is true then it is an indictment on management that they have been unable to identify and secure the services of the "right" striker, especially as the season starts in 13 days time
