Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

4 goals and 4 assists so far this season. Many of them winning us points. Can/should we upgrade? Yes. Does he make a contribution despite his deficiencies? Yes. Does he deserve the vitriol hurled at him by some people? No (in my opinion). Everyone is entitled to their opinions, even if some opinions are, in my opinion, ignorant.
People remembers him losing the ball before they hit the post
No one wants to remember him getting the assist

I think he does his best work in the option half, which is not how I thought he would play when we signed him

in front of our defence he isn’t as effective

How do you judge mentality
@metalgear hkw are you judging effort?

Hojberg is so divisive it’s quite odd

i watch reactions for how the player recovers to get back into action. in our 2-man midfield, skipp and bentancur try much higher more of the time.
hojberg doesn't track back sufficiently though he can and spends lots of time fuming and gesticulating to himself instead of just responding quickly to the situation.
can excuse a forward for not tracking back too quickly... but not the midfield and defence

Serious question. How do you know he doesn’t give 100%?
he takes his time tracking back quite often.
watch the next game and see how if he gets played out, he jogs back.
i acknowlege he has contributed to goals, but he has also contributed to us conceding.
perhaps we can't blame him as the midfield is understaffed; but he shouldn't be giving the impression he is trying the hardest. skipp and bentancur runs more than hojberg with greater urgency almost always.

That isn't down to effort, it's concentration and he's not defensively minded. If you look at where he does his best work it's in the opposition half, closing down and pressing. He busts a gut running around doing that.
The likes of Skipp are more defensively minded, they don't go chasing around, they track runners, read the game better etc. It doesn't mean either gives more than the other, they just have different strengths.

People calling Hugo a cnut and directing dogs abuse to a club legend is vitriol, stating that PEH is limited in some departments is just opinion.

He us having his best season for goals and assists but he has also put up alot of absolute shockers, one doesn't cancel out the other IMO and there is more to a team game than just those stats. There is absolutely no point in scoring the odd goal if you are going to then in other games let players have the ball off you or waltz past you on the edge of your own box, it's counter productive IMO

We need an upgrade in that area regardless, it might not be as urgent as a CB but it's needed and CM is probably the most important part of any quality side IMO

You have given examples of things he has done wrong. But any evidence he isn’t giving 100%?

He seems to only play in the direction he is facing.

When he is facing our goal, getting the ball off the defence, it often just goes back to them, and it slows us down and sometimes puts us under more pressure.

Get him a bit higher and facing the other goal he can put a good pass forward. We have seen it for us and Denmark.

I'd say the key to Hojberg has to be the players he's alongside. If, as now, he's expected to be the forward minded of two midfielders, he will do that, if as when he has been paired with more offensive minded players like Ndombele he's expected to sit, he will sit. I don't think he's got the footballing brain to do both to a high standard. With Skipp alongside him he is asked to be the creator and to be fair the issue of our lack of goals and assists from the whole team is a much bigger issue than just PEH.

Without Kane, Son and Perisic we have zero creativity - Porro may change that but stats don't lie....

Kulu (even allowing for his dip in form this season) is our most creative player alongside Kane. Son and Perisic haven't done near enough this season.

By what he says but more importantly, his application on the field during a match.
TBF, I thought despite the glaring errors he made yesterday, his assist to Kane was excellent. He has the ability to make nice passes/crosses from right outside the box. Not sure if he just needs a long vacation to rest his mind and body...

I've said so many times on here, this reeks of fanboying when falsifying a narrative about how we're treating certain players. Some fans go over the top in attacking certain players (I don't see that with PEH but feel free to actually direct your messages at the posters that have done so instead of making vague statements) and on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have other fans who will praise certain players like they're related to them. As we saw yesterday, we saw the best and worst of PEH, IMO. Giving away a corner for them to equalize but then assists Kane for the winner. That's a pretty simple reflection of his contribution yesterday. Some bad and some good. It can be frustrating to watch to be honest but I don't think anyone here has expressed even mild hatred towards him. If someone has though, why not respond directly to them instead of making broad generalizations? I think most of us here are nuanced enough in our opinions in acknowledging both the positive and the negative.

Personally, I'd rather have Bentancur starting over him unless we decide to play with an attacking CM, in which case PEH can fight it out with Kulu or Kane for that spot.

Yes. Instead of flapping his arms, pointing every where and talking to himself, Hojberg should just shut up turn around and rush and find a better position for himself. That's 100% and Bentancur does that a lot more with greater urgency.

Sure. That is exactly the definition of 100%. I’ll make sure to use that.

It baffles me when managers ask players to do things when some can adjust and others are just not able to. And rather use their strengths just make them do things that they ain't good at. Eg. Son defending. This isn't a dig a Pierre just anyone.

Some people are good at one thing and not able to add to their game. I think most people should be able to. But they can't.

4 goals and 4 assists enough - is that evidence that he is Hojberg is doing enough? there are 38 players ahead of him in the epl... ignoring the strikers, AMS and wingers, topping assists and goals is debruyne and odegaard, both CMs who have 19 and 17 respectively. Looking at actual DMs, Pascal Gross has 11 and Xhaka, 10 goals and assist. I don't think Hojberg does enough in attack and defence for us.

It’s defending a cross to give away the corner
Not sure he could have done anything better at that moment
His dribble for when they hit the post was awful

Seemed like he was scuffing the ball a few times, not hitting the ball cleanly... and I guess this has to be talked about, but his perceived foul on Mitoma for the penalty shout could be considered another area where he should have done better. It was right after Hugo's scuffed punch that didn't clear the ball from the area. Honestly, I didn't think it was a penalty because it was IMO an unlucky coming together. They're always going to show these replays in slow motion on TV which makes it look worse, but there was simply no intent from PEH to foul Mitoma. I don't know if that's just me being biased but even Howard Webb apologized to Brighton for this "error" so I'm not sure what I should say there. Again, I wouldn't blame this solely on PEH if it were a penalty but I just don't see him as a player that elevates us that much.

It's so important to have a good midfield in the PL, especially when we've only got two and Dier seems so averse to stepping up and closing down space, meaning that area right in front of our penalty box is wide open. Teams have so many chances against us from this area and against Brighton it was no exception. We're lucky to have won the game on Saturday but I don't want to make any strong conclusions on that penalty call. I'm wondering what others thought about it though.

Have you been to a live game over here?
The refs are really really bad
And then having Webb over them doesn’t help the poor blokes
And I think our midfield is fine if we accept it’s a two against a three all the time. They can only do so much when outnumbered
The whole system is daft and hampers us a lot
