Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

The next on the list for a spacegoat.

I can't believe the confirmation bias in relation to our midfield yesterday. Don't get me wrong, Sarr did pretty well expecially in the circumstances he got thrown into. But while he was tidy, did he really do much to influence the game? Yet he gets praised and PEH is hammered.

Off the top of my head, PEH did brilliant to win the ball back and delivered a smashing cross for Kane to nearly score a header and he prevented a third with great reading and a great block.

He worked hard all day and was one of our better players yesterday.

No your highlighting the few good things he did
The game bypassed him and he was lost
Sarr actually went looking for the ball and got turnover twice in their half but no back up to help

Hojberg shown this season he can operate well further up the pitch. He can also pass well in the final third
I’d like to see a triangle of sarr with Pierre and Kulu playing in front
That way we may get to see the best out of the 3 of them

Indeed, it is very easy to see a game and criticise a player without thinking about why they look bad. If it had been any two of Arsenal's three midfielders against three Spurs midfielders then they would've looked equally poor. I'm seeing the same thing with Sessegnon getting lots of criticism, completely ignoring the fact he had two to defend against all game and still had our best chance of the match (where he did everything right only for Ramsdale to make a great save) and also created our second best chance of the match with his through ball to Son.

What did Doherty do yesterday despite getting far more help from Kulu/Romero than Sess got from Son and Lenglet?

The formation has not helped either or anyone but the reality is PEH and Sess need improving on, not spacegoating, reality

Fair point. But I guess that is my point, he influenced the game at both ends of the pitch with those pieces of play. Did Sarr do anything comparable? Yet Sarr is being praised and Hojbjerg criticised.

Hojbjerg also didn’t do much wrong. He hit one terrible ball to Son that went out of play I recall when Kane was the better and easier pass. The other one he booted out of play wasn’t exactly subtle but if I remember rightly, it wasnt as bad as it looked as two of theirs were about to smother him.

If he was bypassed, which I don’t fully accept to be honest, it was the fault of the manager. Him and Sarr were given an impossible job.

Sarr was less bypassed than Hojberg
I’m not anti Hojberg unlike some
But his strengths IMO are better playing the way he does for Denmark. Stopping the opposition at source and getting turnovers higher up, it’s not as a DM screen for defence when he just is never aware enough

PEH is more suited to a pressing team than being expected to cover the defence which is needed in the current formation.

Yeah i think so
Hence my suggestion of him playing with Bentacur in front of sarr or even bissouma or Skipp
It gives him a chance to harass and spoil without having issues tracking as much
He plus like that for Denmark or did
Delaney say
Him and eriksen played in front

Lots of them need improving on.... Of our first team regular starters Lloris, Doherty, Royal, Dier, Lenglet and Son have been worse than PEH this season IMO. Probably Romero as well.

Looks like spacegoating others to save the spacegoat to me.

In all truth, I agree with some of those names. You're free to go into their threads and discuss those players. This is the PEH thread though, and the consensus does seem to be that he's been underperforming in some matches. On top of that, his histrionic gesticulations invite more scrutiny because a) Sissoko was doing that when he gave a penalty away in the CL final, and b) it's a bad look to be telling others what to do when he's the one that needs to focus on his own game.

I do feel that generally, the discussions in individual players' threads are nuanced enough and don't devolve into ad hominem attacks against those players (obvious exceptions of course). Most of us are trying to figure out WHY things aren't going well. To add, the reverse of spacegoating, fanboying, is just as bad if not worse.

Well considering most have been saying that most of them shouldn't be near the first team at times then he is in good company

Individually it's hard to say anyone has played particularly well this season, even our top scorer has been poor for large spells of most games tbh PEH has had more than his share of key moments (goals and assists) so in with a shout but I'm not a fan of his general play and in a key position such as CM i think it actually contributes to our slow build up.

Added to the fact he has played every minute when there were times he was rubbish and should have been rested ala Son helps. But that alone for me does not make him a good player, Kulu has been injured alot but he has shown when playing how key he is and that he is still a better and more key player even in less appearances.

PEH is just not that good a player IMO, no amount of comparing him to other duds changes that TBH

Part of the "problem" here is that central midfield is such an important position. It's difficult and demanding, and there's very few CMs that can start 38 games in a season, in addition to playing other matches in the cups (and also playing in internationals). Availability is a huge factor in how important a player is to a team, so PEH obviously is very good in that regard. The fact he hasn't gotten rested is down to the managers so I don't blame the player for being played into the ground.

Overall, like @Grays_1890 said, he's a decent player but not really anything special. I don't think anyone here is saying that he's throwing matches or that he's complete garbage; there's room for nuance here. Things don't always have to be binary (he's a GHod OR he's a a waste of life). You can do good things like scoring and assisting goals and still be average because of other lesser contributions or mistakes leading to goals at the other end.

I'll end by saying that a real leader would show others what to do by example. I've stated so many times that we already have Conte micromanaging during matches, giving the players so many instructions.

Considering you well document your frustrations about him this is a very fair assessment. I rate him slightly higher than you, but I can’t argue with that judgement. I think even his biggest doubters would concede he has something to offer, and I’m sure we’d all agree it would be in the clubs and PEHs interests to be rotated a bit more. He offered some of his best form towards end of last season when we was only having one game per week and was hoping Bissouma or Skipp would lighten the load this season but he’s still playing every game. At worst he is a solid player, but he’s not so brilliant that he is undroppable so really would help him and us to rotate him now and then at the very least…..

I think a lot of my frustrations would dissappear if he played in a 3 with Bentancur + 1 other, with him having more licence to get forward - Bentancur is much better at recycling the ball and making the right pass deeper on the pitch and earlier in our play and alongside another more defensive midfielder with similar passing ability it would help our play no end imo, then PEH could focus on picking up passes further forward from wide and crucially, facing goal

Which one is PEH and which one is Bentancur?
