Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

So he wins Danish Player of the Year, Kulu win Swedish Player of the Year, Sarr wins African Young Player, we also have one of the very best strikers in world football, arguably the best player in Asia, despite his recent poor form, Brazil's number 9, a world cup winning central defender, a former world cup winner and a recent world cup finalist in goal but we are still nowhere near challenging for trophies.

I mean those are nice accolades to have but really Swedish and Danish player of the years awards? The competition isn't exactly high. [emoji28]

Brazil No9 is nice but again it's not a vintage Brazil. We aren't talking about Romario. [emoji28]

Agreed. Particularly the part about Brazil. Could never understand why they were favourites for the World Cup. I’d put my house on the bookies making them favourites in 2026. I guess they have to cover themselves in case they do win. They’re overdue to win it but not with the current set of players they have.

I agree.

But I also agree that we have quite a few real quality players, on some positions we even have cover, and we have young talent coming through with great potential.

That's not enough to have a well functioning squad though.

Thought he was decent today. One of our better players. Worked hard, played some decent passes and made some great blocks. Was better than Sarr who seems to be getting a lot of praise on here. Sarr was decent by the way but those two boys were thrown to the wolves today. Sent into a gunfight with a knife and fork.

Hojberg was gash
He has a habit of letting people run off him
I like him and think he is better than he gets credit for but his switching off hurts when we’re playing a 2

Just saw the second goal back. Dunno how anyone can blame Hojbjerg for that. That was all on the tactical set up. We had 2 in midfield. They had 3. PEH and Sarr spent most of the day covering Xhaka and Odegaard. Partey was pulling the tinkle with the amount of time and space he had on the pitch coming from deeper.

PEH has tried to go and pressure Partey to win the ball back high up the pitch, Partey’s played a pass and taken PEH out of the game. If we had a third CM, you’d imagine that’s where he’d be covering.

I am not his greatest fan, as all know, but that said we should have gone 3 and for me Skipp in there as there should have been 2, get about you, in your face CMs

For better or worse we needed that guts and bluster in midfield ALA Sarr to get about them

Spot on.

A lot of people (naming no names) combine high emotion with low football intelligence.

And with Zinchenko they kinda had 4.

On the other hand, PEH can drop back instead of pressuring party, forcing son or Kane or kulu to follow.

3 v 2 and you chase the one furthest back, it becomes 2 v 1. An impossible situation in the midfield.

Not how I would play. And where is his viking general leadership qualities? Does a lot with his hands but no one follows. He is the senior midfield player and expected to organise the play around it.

Indeed, it is very easy to see a game and criticise a player without thinking about why they look bad. If it had been any two of Arsenal's three midfielders against three Spurs midfielders then they would've looked equally poor. I'm seeing the same thing with Sessegnon getting lots of criticism, completely ignoring the fact he had two to defend against all game and still had our best chance of the match (where he did everything right only for Ramsdale to make a great save) and also created our second best chance of the match with his through ball to Son.

What did Doherty do yesterday despite getting far more help from Kulu/Romero than Sess got from Son and Lenglet?

It came from a Hugo kick out if I recall correctly. So PEH has made an effort to try get us up the pitch, which most of the crowd were baying for at that point, tried to put Partey under some pressure given he had acres of space all afternoon and got done by a good pass to Saka. The problem isn't PEH there, it's the fact our midfield was left outnumbered all afternoon. So we either sat in all day and left our front 3 completely isolated or tried to do something about it. By doing something about it, you always take a risk.
