Mauricio Pochettino

Who did Poch advocate selling?
Everyone thought Toby was done for a bargain £25 yet no one wanted him which was odd
Maybe other clubs see our players and think their not winners we don’t want them

I don’t remember Poch advocating selling any of our players when they were in their prime either.

Pochs supposed first choice targets chose other clubs. Mane and Winjalden chose Liverpool over us. Reportedly due to the higher wages on offer. Similarly Fernandes and Wan Bisaka chose Man U for the same reasons. I know we are biased, but even given a level playing field, I suspect if we were players we too would opt for one of these clubs over Spurs. Maguire wanted guaranteed playing time which with Toby, Verts and Sanchez here, he certainly wasn’t going to get in the short term. Maddison reportedly doesn’t like Spurs and presumably felt Eriksen was blocking his path here. Zaha was ridiculously overpriced and his stats are poor. Anyone else?

The only one that Levy can realistically be held accountable for is Grealish. He was trying to negotiate a keen price taking into account Villa’s straightened circumstances and was apparently on the verge of having this accepted, when Villa was suddenly taken over and the new owners blocked the transfer. With the benefit of hindsight, he could have secured the transfer earlier, but who could have foreseen what was to take place?

Although I'm not fussed on maguire, but surely we must have known that Toby was goi g to hold us to ransom and we aren't offering Jan a suitable contract so wo want away, opening up space for maguire.
I really struggle to understand our medium term transfer plans at times.

It’s was 3 years ago wasn’t it?

I found Dubai's post (in this same thread)....

Let me list, just from recollection, the players Poch wanted versus the players he got.

2014 - wanted Hector Moreno from Espanyol. Got Fazio. Wanted Morgan Schneiderlin from Soton . Got Benjamin Stambouli. Wanted Jay Rodriguez, also from Soton. Got no one.
2015 - Wanted Berahino. Got N'Jie. A failed move which ruined Berahino's career, incidentally.
2016 - Wanted Mane, from Soton. Got N'Koudou, after he spent 40 days in a hotel waiting for Levy to agree a fee. Wanted Wijnaldum from Saudi Sportswashing Machine. Got Sissoko. Wanted Zaha. Didn't get him.
2017 - Wanted Barkley. Didn't get him, or anyone, for attacking midfield.
2018 - Wanted Grealish, eventually. Didn't get him. Got absolutely no one, in a dereliction of duty by the board that still haunts us today.
2019 - got who he wanted, as I understand it.

In all the years he was here, he was only ever backed once like Klopp was backed, despite taking us to the same heights Klopp took Liverpool. He had to make do with second-choices and bargain bins, and the funny thing is, he turned them into absolute stars more often than not, despite that. Out of all his signings, I can think of maybe six that failed - Fazio, Stambouli, N'Jie, N'Koudou, Janssen, Aurier. And out of those, roughly 2/3rds were the bargain bin rude boys that Levy used to pull out to provide warm bodies where needed - Fazio, Stambouli, N'Jie, N'Koudou.

Blame lies on him for Janssen and Aurier, both expensive and high-profile mistakes. Which, out of 26 signings (many not his first-choices) isn't half bad. There are some still in the 'iffy' category, including Sanchez, Ndombelly and so on, and if you really want to, you can count them against him too (although in that case, you also have to give him credit for Lo Celso from this summer - the polar opposite to the frustrating Tanguy). Other than that, I'm really not seeing where this precipitous decline in his ability to improve or identify players came from.

We had finished 3rd, 2nd and 3rd and then decided to become the first British team in the history of the modern transfer window to make no signings - *twice*.

Thst probably has more to do with the drop-off in energy, motivation, fitness and meteorology than anything else - utter stagnation, because of that dereliction of duty.

I found Dubai's post (in this same thread)....

I have dealt with most of them in my previous post and gave detailed reasons. To deal with them in summary:

Moreno - chose to stay in Spain iirc
Mane and Wynaldum - chose Liverpool
Schneiderlin - chose United
Barkley - chose Chelsea
Jay Rodriguez- wasn’t he badly injured?
Grealish - possible blame on Levy*
Zaha - signed new contract at Palace and became ridiculously expensive
Berahinho - TTFFT !

Edit: * and with today’s revelations, we may even have dodged a bullet here anyway!

I'm sorry but anyone putting forward wanting but not getting Jay fudging Rodriguez as a point in Poch's defense needs to be hooked off the stage of debate. He is / was nowhere near Saha's level and 'Arry was slated for managing to get his man there..The dude is perma crocked, not quick, not strong, not even a particularly gifted finisher.

Not sure we bid on Maddison

This is always going to be the problem when talking about possible signings of the past though isn't it? I feel that categorically the only players that we know 100% that we have bid for are the ones we sign.

It appears that it is us more than anyone solely because it's the club we support and as such will be surrounded by a stream of media content regarding Spurs but every high level club is interested in every high level player and has made a bid or put the feelers out according to some newspaper or website somewhere. What we chose to reference on here in favour of an argument is deciding what time the clock is right twice a day. I appreciate it's fun to speculate but it should be clear that's what we're doing unless genuinely privy to negotiations.

Even another chairman could be spouting gonad*s about a supposed bid (whether well received or not), it's a sales tactic that can be a catalyst for other moves. This is before we even start banging on about the press!!!

That’s a huge part of the game
Rumours and flimflam

and lets face it, other than Mane, none of them have done anything, so we've hardly missed out, a couple of them are definite bullets dodged

Wilnaldum has been class to
So under rated

agreed . A great squad player. But who would you play him instead of during our heyday?

And Re Mane. If we had bought him, presumably we wouldn’t have bought Son. Who would you rather have?

Wasn’t son here before hand? I actually can’t remember TBH
Wilnaldum would have got in our team IMO
We may have changed the way we played though

who would he have replaced ( even in a different formation? Our first XI chose itself imo:

........................Lloris.......................:

Walker......... Toby.......Verts.........Rose

............,,,Dembele ....Wanyama/Dier

Dele................Eriksen .........Son

.....................Kane..................

Oh happy days! Brought a tear to my eye just typing that out!!!

But that side is 2 years old
He could have come in for Dier or Wanyama

Wijnaldum and Mane signed for Liverpool the 16/17 season iirc - the year we finished second.

Would signing them instead of Sissoko and Nkoudou made the difference between 2nd and 1st? possibly....

Certainly would have helped our central midfield issues over the following seasons when Wanyana and Dier were both injured/ill regularly if we had someone like Wijnaldum to call on.
