That’s my point though you won’t have been wrong, you like many of us, me included have been saying all along for him to go back to basics, he always had it in him I don’t think anybody even doubted that it’s just he seemed too stubborn to do it, and to be fair it’s been a year, that’s not knee jerking.

If we build on tonight over the next couple of months that’s all I am asking for

But you're right, the shape looked good, the line up was almost as good as it could have been and there was a hunger there I haven't really seen in a while. They weren't good enough to draw any real conclusions but we had to beat them and we did it looking like a Poch team. I really hope this is the start of a turnaround and I'm shovelling humble pie into my big gob over the next few weeks.

I think Winks not being in the team also had a big positive impact. We played the game at a much quicker pace without him, generally passing forwards instead of constantly going side to side.

It's a fair point and occurred to me too. I really like Winks but the difference between his passing and Ndombele's was night and day. Itll be interesting to see if that is sustained over a run of games.

Bad results is one thing, bad management something else. You wont have been wrong.

I am delighted with the signal sent today, but it will be a while before I get over Poch losing his head like he has.

Play a 4231. Not because it has magical properties, but because it suits the squad and they all understand it.
Play Kane up front
Play Alli behind him
Play Son left, NOT up front
If youre going to play Sissoko, make him the DM
We do not need the wantaway players at all
We should promote the young players ahead of the like of Alderweireld.

What does Poch do tonight?

And is it me, or was that our best performance this season?

Gazzanaiga = I like that he tries to catch/control the ball. Not just push it away. Not that he had much to do.
Davies = understated as always, but essential. Better than Rose has been all year in defence and attack.
Vertonghen = classy as always
Sanchez = Alderweireld who?
Aurier = not a complete liability. Probably about as good as he gets really.
Sissoko = with Aurier probably our worst performer, though certainly wasnt "bad"
NDombele = EXCELLENT. I still look at him and see a player who operates deeper ultimately, but no complaints at all today
Son = Class. Took his goals well. Constant threat. Annoying decision making. The usual.
Alli = low key MOTM for me. Thought he was excellent.
Lamela = Best Ive seen him since Leicester. Quality.
Kane = different level.

subs, Foyth, Dier = Nice to see them back. Lo Celso = brief, but fudge me how exciting?

It has to be said, RSB were the ultimate Dr Tottenham, and I think easily the worst team we played all season. It would be interesting to see how well we would have done if there were any competition. Though for the sake of confidence, probably best we didnt find out.

Best bit for me of the day? Clear signs Poch has got hold of the squad and been working with them.

The CBs were a proper unit.
The rotation and interplay of the front 4 was superb, best attacking play Ive seen from us in a year at least.

And the clearest marker? Sissoko. Classic Dier game. Sat deeper near all times, dropped in between the defenders, screened and did his bit.
The most obvious sign of training ground work being done, of focus, design, a plan, and finally some leadership.

Heres to hoping its a sign of the resurgence of Poch, and not just a bump on his road out of the club.

Exactly what I have Ben saying too. See my team selection earlier. Why oh why hasn’t Poch done this sooner? It seemed so obvious to most of us amateurs! Anyhow, well done to the team for an (apparently) great performance ( I am currently Pirating on the high seas!) and definitely a superb result. Let’s keep it going at Anfield ! COYS
 
Our problem is still when we don’t have the ball. In previous seasons we would have won the ball higher up the pitch, harried teams into making mistakes then move the ball quickly after the turnover. This season we are a lot more standoffish and rely on a team making mistakes for a turnover rather than pressing them into it. We are still missing an on form Eriksen imo, to intercept and start a quick attack. Would have been great to see peak Eriksen line up with ndombele.
 
I'm happy. Still, we shouldn't get too too carried away with either the scoreline or the performance tonight, as churlish as that might possibly sound. Green shoots have broken the surface (and it's about time) but Red Star were pretty abject from what I saw; we shouldn't overlook that. We waltzed straight through them the way teams have been doing to us, and Sunday will be a completely different citeal of iasc.
 
Didn't see the Lamela love-in tbh. Son gets my vote. And everyones in the stadium, if his standing ovation was anything to go by.
Was impressed with Ndombele. Kane's passing game was on another level.

Get over it and recognize there are some serious mitigating factors to accompany his uncertainty. Or don't. Your choice.Obviously.
