Grealish

Her does sound like a good player. He draws fouls like no one I've seen. There is something there for sure. But imagine one thing: if you took the £30m odd to sign Grealish and the £30m spent on Sissoko, could you put it to better use?
£30m for Grealish might sound like a lot now but I’d bet in a year he’d be worth much more than that. I think he’d get more game time than some think, and will be in the England squad within a few months at most of being here. Sissoko whilst I think has a rough ride on here and for me has done a decent job, we could get a more talented player with that money....

Of course we are better now, but the point is we had established players when Dele came and no one was expecting him to go straight into first team but he did. Not saying Grealish will but all this labelling of squad player etc - even if they are they’d still get a shedload of games and if the quality of our backups were better than currently are they’d get even more games because our first XI really need more rest than they currently get.

People keep banging on about Onomah, Grealish was the much better player of the two at Villa last season. We quite clearly aren’t going to get elite level signings so we have to improve our squad quality so Poch can more confidently rest our stars. It’s half time, he’s got an assist by taking a corner and he’s been fouled GHod knows how many times. He’s playing well enough, but being first game of season he’s not going to be firing on all cylinders.....

I don’t think he should be getting judged on one game/half a game. It doesn’t bother me even if he had a stinker tonight. I’ve seen enough to know he could become top drawer under the right coach.

If you have two players paid £50k pw off your books, its not such an issue presumably.

In short, where we are now, we have to avoid another Sissoko type signing, we don't need sqaud fillers (not saying Grealish would be, he looks to have more potential), we need players who will be starters or at least challange for a starting place. And it's better not to spend at all, than get another player who does what the existing ones do. That just weakens us in future windows.

Fair points but we looked flat quite few times last season without Eriksen, I think the lad could fill that gap and grow into the team.

My point was if u combined 2 x 30m for one player there aren’t many players that would be 60m and fit into our wage structure.

Disagree

I think we'd potentially be offering in the region of 150k for a signing in that transfer ballpark - would be more than enough to tempt most players we'd be looking to sign

Fair enough. I didn’t realise we had the £150pw in the locker for a newbie.

Who we thinking?

Let's hope we get him. I've only seen him on a YT vid. He can move the ball around, and with Poch would probably develop.

One big thing for me this season is taking our attacking play to the next level. We need better movement and coordination in attack. City are the obvious examples. A player like Grealish can move past a defender, but then needs movement to pick out a pass.

Would you play Grealish over Lamela, Moura, Son or Alli? Or for that matter Dembele? I think he'd be one for the future if he knuckeled down. We hardly saw Moura last season and he came from PSG with CL expereince etc.

I think that might depend on a number of factors such as who the player is, how old the player is, what club they are coming from, what league they are playing in, how much they are currently earning and whether or not they are at their peak or how far along they are in their career curve

I think if we were to sign a player for that sort of fee he would be expected to be of a level to push for a starting XI position straight away and so would be getting a 'first XI' wages, if we're paying our top earner 200k + bonuses then i think 150k is a good guess as to what we can offer a player we're prepared to pay top dollar for.

Sissoko supposedly earns 90k if rumours are to be believed and i think that would have made him one of our highest earners at the time we signed him so if you extrapolate that to where we are now then the above makes sense.

A caveat to that would be if the player in question was young and from a middling team on the continent, Bailey from Bayer as an example, then I'd expect us to be paying closer to the 100k(?) Alli is on and with the promise of regular wage hikes to match his progression, but for a more established player at the peak of his game then we'd be able tp go higher (imo)

for example if we sign DeLigt for the rumoured 55 mill that Ajax want i can see him coming in and accepting around 60-80k a week which would fit our structure and still be a huge pay rise for him

however the wage structure remains an issue. I doubt we would agree to pay over 60 mill for a player plus 150k a week........just because Harry has signed his mega contract doesnt mean the floodgates have opened and all our players will be doubling their salaries. Harry is a special case. After Harry i guess the most any other current player will be offered is about 130k a week. I believe we will remain prudent regarding salaries and especially for new signings if their transfer fee is over the 50 mill mark. The overall investment would put Levy off imo

I think JG can play a touch deeper if needed (same with Eriksen). That would then enable us to be bold and have Moura join in with Alli and Son behind Kane. Or even a 433. I like the fact it gives us options. I completely agree re: Moura but the bottom line is we were quite stale at times when Eriksen didn’t play.

If I thought we had a 70m purchase in us then maybe I would be cooler on JG but I just don’t think we do at the moment.

Top paragraph sounds fair, but let’s not use Sissoko as a benchmark.

I find it hard to believe he's on 90k a week. Where was this from?
