Summer 2018 transfer thread

Shaquri has been a player with lots of talent capable of great suff but poor more often than not throughout his career. That overhead kick was not a surprise but if he can be better than average for more than 7 games next year this will be.

I was glad we didn't sign him and I am surprised a good team went in for him, he was at Stoke for three years for a reason. If Liverpool didn't go in for him I would expect him to have signed for a Fulham level at best.

I pay little heed to whatever Chalie Adams says. The spiteful little tosser.
I think it suits some of the Spurs tinted spectacle wearers amongst us to take this attitude with Shaqiri especially now he's with Liverpool and then uses CA's (of all people) words to underpin this. I though remain 50/50 and I think he could have done a job for us at the price and also taking into considering we are not fighting off the new player who wants to join us with a stick ATM.
He will suit Liverpool's game as they play 3 up high and punt it up to them as early as possible with those 3 players being pretty much free'd of any defensive responsibility.

Unless we are going to suddenly change our whole style of play then I'm not sure what a wide player who won't defend will offer us?

I would have signed Suarez the runt from Liverpool......

Talented runts I can accept. The untalented ones can stay away
Talented runts who work hard for their team are fine. Talented runts who think they are above working hard I have no time for.

As I said in my last post, I expect Shaquiri will do well at Liverpool because of their set up. He would've lasted less time under Poch than Nacer Chadli.

I'd be pretty sure that one of those seven games will be against us.
Just please let it not be the opening game at the new venue.

When we have signed players under Poch and whether they were a success or not :

Its obviously difficult to 'prove' whether we'd be more successful or not by employing a transfer policy where we accepted paying more in order to get deals done earlier in the window.

However its obviously indisputable that waiting like we do is more risky given that is someone gazumps you, or there is some logistically failure, or the player has a change or heart etc, then we have very limited / no time to change targets.

We've been successful in recent years, but I'd be reluctant to say its because of our transfer policy. Feels more despite our transfer policy

I think it's a bit ridiculous to say we can't improve the squad unless we sign £70m plus players, as people have said only 15 players in the entire history of football have gone for more than that. We haven't won a trophy for what 11 years, of course the squad can be improved.

I'm not saying it's easy to improve as we have a lot of talent players with good characters but players like Fred, Jorginho, Fabinho, Lemar, Nainggolan, Lenglet, Ruiz, Maddison, Amadou,Diallo, Kondogbia, Delaney etc have all moved this summer and would have got into our squad.

I'm sure that there's other players around who are obtainable, obviously no one can say for certain but there's Lookman, Bailey etc who were mentioned in the Zaha thread as alternatives to him for example who would likely be cheaper.

If it is sell before you buy.... Perhaps we will have to contend with January signings, as we would still be able to sell after the EPL transfer window closes.

Yeah, gets a bit grating when people say "we can't improve our squad easily" or "name someone who will improve the squad" etc. It's not our job to name players, that's what our scouts are paid for. Some people act like there are only 7 players in the world who can improve us, but we can only afford two of them. I'm not saying it's easy to find the next Modric or Bale but there are always players out there waiting to be discovered.

Some signings will fail that's just life but to simply do nothing as we have done (so far) is farcical as Billyiddo said.

Who has said we need to sign £70m plus players to improve the squad?

Whilst I see the point you're making, I personally think it ignores a vital aspect of Poch's work, notably that signings have to have the right character and fit into his philosophy. I am not saying these players could not, but you have to think there is a reason we have not even looked at most of them. I mean seriously, Nainggolan? Good player but do you really think he would fit in with our dressing room? In fact, the longer I look at the list of names you put forward, the further I am convinced that we are doing the right thing by whatever system it is Poch has the club working on. Talent? Not denying you might be right. But it is about more than that. Without the chemistry it would not work. Remember the "super 7"!
