Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Yeah he said we need to win more games like at Stamford Bridge to develop a winning mentality, which clearly means he doesn’t think we have it yet does it not?

We have it, we just need to "develop" it further. :p

Ah, pochettino, you lovely soft hard Teddy bear of a man. :D

Possibly most likely saying that we are developing a winning mentality that should be tangible with these types of results

Wasn’t that what Pirate was getting at, were at a certain stage that of developing such a mentality but in order to truly achieve it there are further stages to get to....

He specifically mentions at stadiums like Chelsea and the Bernabeau which is good, clearly recognising the need to win big away games...

Come on man! I kinda get what you guys were saying, in that we need to prove it in some big, decisive games. But today was such an example of a winning mentality. If the argument is ‘we need to win a trophy’, fine. But make that argument. If today doesn’t show a winning mentality, nothing will.

A goal down against a team that has shown before they can get ahead and shut up shop. No Kane. Defending Champions that hate us. No win at the ground for 28 years. By the end of the game we’ve fully deserved the win and it looked like men against boys. Previously I was thinking we needed to win the cup to show we had it, but today, for me they proved it. Look at our players’ reaction afterwards, not really that moved by it. It’s like we just beat Swansea. Look at our performance. Look at the fact that Chelsea needed a win to stay in the top 4 hunt. Look at the fact that a draw would be good for us but not for one second did we play for a draw or deserve one, we fully deserved a win.

This was a decisive game against a big rival and we clearly had enough of a mentality to win it comfortably. Is Poch going to let us rest on our laurels? No. Is he going to reinforce the standards he has set? Of course.

If you think we need to win a trophy, fine. But the only other logic to this argument is that we need to win every game, if this game isn’t enough. We’ve beaten United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Madrid and Dortmund this year. Even if we lose against City or United in the Cup, I don’t think it will be down to a lack of winning mentality.

No the counter argument was that we aren’t there yet with a winning mentality because the end game is to win things and we are on a journey towards that.

Look Chelsea was a good result, and it’s brilliant to get that monkey off their back. But let’s be fair it’s not like we went to an all conquering team and against all odds won. Chelsea had lost 4 out of their last 6 - even Bournemouth had recently scored 3 against them. We still had to go out there and do the business so I don’t want it to be made out like I’m down playing a great result but this isn’t like beating City, Liverpool or even United away - they really are a level below this season....

Oh, yeah, sure. It's just a bit of an abstract thing to really measure. People would argue after we lost to juventus that we lack that winning mentality, but I don't think we lost that tie due to a lack of winning mentality, we just simply wasted too many chances. Football is a lot about luck and margins, really, and the teams that have that are often attributed with some sort of magical skill, like winning mentality, when in reality it's kind of hard to pinpoint what it really is. Like when Leicester won the PL, or Chelsea won the PL last year or that year they won the CL. Sure, all of those teams believed in themselves, but they all had bucketloads of luck and margins going their way.

Its funny, you hear the pundits applaud our performance yesterday, saying how we dominated etc. And although we were excellent in the second half, we were truly dominated in the first half, and lucky to go into half time at 1-1. We obviously deserved every bit of credit we got from yesterday, a brilliant team performance in sum, but a few ball bounces the other way in the first half and it could've been game over, and the pundits would be saying the exact opposite.

My point is, I think we've show over the course of the last years that we never give up. The mentality is there. But we also need to be more clinical and cynical, and also have a bit of luck to be lauded as having a "winning mentality" in the eyes of the experts.

Two things.

The second half of the season freight train is well and truly happening again.

Also, We have put in some real dominating second half performance s this season, where we have basically just taken complete control and crushed the spirit of our opposition. And I'm talking the big games. Juve away, Liverpool away, manure home, arsenal home, Chelsea away.

It’s definitely about margins, but it’s funny that the more experience our young players (well mostly young) get at this level the more margins we tip in our favour. This is why I’m quite happy and comfortable saying we haven’t yet truly got that winning mentality. Because season on season we are learning, improving our mentality and going through hurdles we’ve previously fallen at and are inching closer and closer to the promised land. We are so close to achieving something special, and I’m not talking about ending a Chelsea hoodoo, not about being top of the league for a calendar year, something quantifiable and truly memorable. No matter what the individuals definition of winning mentality, we all recognise we are mentally strong and the amazing journey we are going on and that’s far more important....

Excellent post. Yesterday we took chances that came our way and all was good. We've had two worldies from Eriksen and Victor just at the right time in big games recently.

We never give up, always think there is a way back, and never let the opposition take liberties with us.

What's tough is games against Emirates Marketing Project, Liverpool, man u, Chelsea are always unpredictable as there is some severe talent on show and along with the refs you cannot control everything.

The main thing that annoyed me yesterday was how they kept going on about Spurs away record against the big 6. If they looked at every other top 6 clubs record they would see most of them have poor records away to each other, if memory serves we aren’t even the worst....

I’ve been banging that drum for some time

The team that wins the league has the best away results generally on these games as their the differentiator

It is annoying because it's almost like the last possible box a team has to tick.

If you're winning games away from home against the top 6 you are basically going to be ....err champions?

We had the same with Kane. How far down the list are they with him?....'Well, has he scored a goal on the moon?' 'No?....well he's sh.t then'.

Yawn.
