The differences in styles and personalities is what makes the game, especially internationally more interesting and memorable, for better or worse.

Hang on, was it what was shown in the picture of that tweet above with Otamendi holding his ears against the Dutch? Or were you referring to another occasion?

That's the way of the world in modern times, unfortunately. You can dish, but you can't take. For all the nazi-harbouring savages goading about the Falklands before the England match, they were perfectly ready to kill people over a vehicle plate on Top Gear.

The fact that they had such little possession is on those players too. The dropping off, and the complete lack of composure on the ball, started when Gordon was still on, when they still had outlets. I think the moment got to them. They should have been able to find opportunities to counter even once Konsa was on.

I think Argentina ultimately won the mental battle. They imposed their will on the game, and our players didn’t feel like they could play their game. I do think Tuchel wanted to build a side that was about pace and physicality, and I thought it worked well for the most part. It worked well in that game up until we couldn’t find ways to get on the ball. The system and the profile of the squad selection definitely suggested counter attacking was going to be a strategy for us.

I’m not sure why people would assume Tuchel suddenly decides to become David Moyes. Has that ever been his profile as a manager? I get that he’s not Pep, but he’s not exactly Jose either. He’s willing to be pragmatic to win knock out games, but it was clear from the message coming out of Croatia that the players were dropping and he wasn’t happy with it. So why all of sudden is everyone directing 100% of their anger towards a manager that has never operated like that before, and not at least considering the broader circumstances, that maybe the players had something to do with it?

And again, to be clear I am much more personally fond of the players than I am the manager. I think they’ve been an absolute credit and it feels like we’re getting closer and closer. I don’t want to ‘blame’ the players so much as just have it acknowledged in the debate their contributions to what happened. Ultimately I think there’s a bigger picture exemplified by Scaloni, De La Fuente and even Southgate. They are managers that have been rooted in their culture of their nations and their football organisations, and have played a role in establishing the ‘DNA’ over years and years. I think Tuchel tried to do something with his squad selection that was to be distinctly England (and not try to be a worse Spain for instance) and I think that made sense. But if there is a mental issue in getting over the line, with the football culture in our country, the demands, the history baked into all of our psyches (something Southgate understood very well) then it’s going to take more than 2 years for an outsider to solve it with a camp every couple of months. It’s more systemic.

I quite like the idea of Carsley eventually taking over. I feel like Tuchel is probably a classic FA hire, over reacting to outside noise when I think they largely had it broadly right with the Southgate profile. But I think Tuchel has done his best to understand our football culture, our strategic advantages, and he knows how to win. He’s delivered the best finish since 1966, as have the players. But the players should have executed better on the pitch in the semi final. I don’t think it is going to be helpful to have a toxic debate around an England manager, where our culture chews up and spits them out, and allows the players to avoid scrutiny or self reflection. They had a part to play.

It’s the same debate every tournament. We lose and it’s 100% the manager’s fault always. Nothing to do with the players.

I put most of the blame for the other night on Tuchel, but if we're being honest, we've struggled to keep possession at pretty much every tournament I can remember us qualifying for.

We've also had managers who've won league titles in Europe's top leagues and even the Champions League, yet they come to England and suddenly they're supposedly clueless. That can't just be a coincidence. After 60 years without winning anything, you'd think we'd have accepted it's not only the manager. Some of the responsibility has to sit with the players too. Like Kane for example who rarely shows up in semi finals and finals for England.

I also think we sometimes overlook the fact that other countries have world-class players as well. England aren't the only team with elite talent.

The way I see it, we've had teams that could have won tournaments, not teams that should have. There's an important difference.

Everyone is like it, just on a different scale. Us Brits are not exactly the best losers on the planet, we just cry about conspiracies, being cheated and how unfair things always are
 
The final was a lot like the Argentina performance in WW2. Did nothing until the final stages and then showed themselves to be a completle bunch of clams afterwards.

Oh and that brawl with the Germans after they lost a shootout 20 years ago. They’re quite simply bad winners and atrocious losers. At least now that Messi’s legs have all but gone we shouldn’t have much to worry about from them in foreseeable future and they’ll hopefully be in similar doldrums to Italy by 2030.

I’m a huge Messi fan, unapologetically so. I didn’t like him trying to get Sideshow Bob sent off. Doesn’t alter or affect his legacy in my eyes. He cemented his status as the GOAT by winning the last World Cup. He’s already won every trophy that he needed to win in football. Disappointing ending to his international career if this is the end but all footballers have bad moments.
