Turkey Syria Earthquake

DTA

Clint Dempsey
Almost apocalyptic scenes out there. With an almost unprecedented 2 earthquakes (7.8 then 7.5) hitting within 24hrs. 120+ After shocks reported some as large as 5 on the R scale.

Over 20,000 confirmed dead already, but this will unfortunately rise, as there are over 6000 buildings (most mid rise) completely flattened.

those that escaped death now face danger from the extreme weather with no shelter as temperatures drop below -4 at night in an uncharacteristically cold spell.

They need bedding, cold weather clothes, tents etc. if you have any of these items you can donate contact your local Turkish center who are collecting. I will try to post a list of them later.

If not, please consider making a donation No matter how small. If you can give, even if it’s the cost of a coffee please do.

You can Donate to the British Red Cross using this link as the are working with their sister organisation on the ground in Turkey.

thanks guys.

Russia are apparently helping too, search specialists and humanitarian aid.

A complicated situation.
It certainly is. Turkey has been engaged in a fairly impressive geopolitical balancing act with Russia up until now and I suppose is reaping the dividends. Choking the aid into Syria though betrays Russia's real sentiments. Yes, I am cynical.

In fairness The restrictions on aid by Russia and Assad are on crossings from Turkey to the ‘Rebel held areas’ of Syria. Not from Turkey to Syria as a whole.

Basically they only allow (through pre earthquake peace negotiations) one crossing through to Idlib (spelling) which is the area of Syria where hodgepodge groups of anti Assad rebels (including some close to al queda) are based, as well as loads of anti Assad Civilians. Whom are basically being protected from attack by the Turkish Army who have bases there. It is also the area of Syria worse effected by the Earthquake ( as I understand it).

In fairness I know Russia have sent Search and rescue personnel to Turkiye and are assisting substantially in non rebel held parts of Syria.
