Transfer thread

If we sign players late, specifically after the season has already started he will have.

I think that will depend on position.

Last season we had major tournaments happening and some of our defences were sparse. We even had Donley operating as a LB.

Because this ones an odd year, Frank will have access to a huge squad. It will be only Madds and Kulu that will overly concern him. He will have anxiety if we land a player late that he needs for their positions would be my guess.

It's always ideal for get players in early though.

You are more conciliatory than I am. fudge that, I've seen too many seasons get off to a poor start precisely because we weren't prepped and ready to go when the season actually starts (funnily enough Ange has been the exception to this, even more reason for why I don't buy the excuses given for him). We need a DM and RWF period. If we don't have those two options before the season starts, we simply aren't giving ourselves the best chance at starting the season well. I won't be hearing any complaints about missing out by a few points again when we didn't give ourselves the chance to get those points.

I do agree that when you're in Spurs current position you need to manage the things you are most in control of. The problem with transfers is that there are 3 parties involved i.e. 2 clubs and a player (+entourage). We're not in control in the same way we are with coaching the squad to be ready for the season opener.

I've also noticed over the years that it is very rare that the newbies become the most important players. I'll take my hat of to guys like Toby, Dele and Big Vic who were the exception and hit the ground running in the 1st team. Most likely, it is the core of this current squad that get is through the first half of the new season.

It's always better to get the player in early for sure.

For me getting the right player in is way more important. Would rather get the right player on deadline day than almost the right player in before preseason.

If it's possible to get the same player earlier, but we can a better deal by waiting a while it's more difficult. Depends how much money we can save imo.

I'd argue that newbies rarely became the main players for a couple of reasons. 1. We tend not to buy ready made, high level first 11 guaranteed players. 2. When we do buy players who may fill that kind of role we've tended to buy them later into the window typically after the season has started.

I hear all of that regarding the complexities of deals but there's no reason why our deals need to be more complex than everyone else's. So again you know me I don't really truck with excuses period. 😅

We want to be at least top 4 and we want to push on from there.

Most ready made, high level first 11 guaranteed players will be both really expensive and good enough or close to good enough to also play for richer clubs.

That puts us in a rather different and imo more complex situation than the biggest and richest clubs below us and the somewhat smaller clubs below us in the hierarchy.

True. But you also tend to unnecessarily label 'reasons' as 'excuses' and then rush to dismiss them too. 😁
